South Africa elections see ANC party, that freed country from apartheid, lose 30-year majority
once-dominant ANC had received just over 40% in the election on Wednesday, well short of the majority it had held since the famed all-race vote of 1994 that ended apartheid and brought it to power under Nelson Mandela. The final results are still to be formally declared by the independent electoral commission that ran the election. While opposition parties hailed it as a momentous breakthrough for a country struggling with deep poverty and inequality, the ANC remained the biggest party by some way but will now need to look for a coalition partner or partners to remain in the government and reelect President Cyril Ramaphosa for a second and final term.

Jacob Zuma's party emerges big winner in South Africa
South Africa's election this week may be former President Jacob Zuma, whose newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party has exceeded expectations and emerged as a major factor in the African National Congress' sharp drop in support. MK is not going to win the election and is unlikely to be a coalition partner, analysts say, while Zuma is barred from standing for parliament because of a conviction for contempt of court. But the party, which advocates nationalising land and banks and scrapping the constitution, is on course to unseat the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, Zuma's home region.

Time up: BHP gives up plan to take over its rival Anglo American
LONDON: Mining group BHP Group on Wednesday walked away from its $49 billion plan to take over rival Anglo American, which rejected a last-ditch request for more time, ending for now its six-week pursuit. BHP's aim was to secure Anglo's prized copper assets in Latin America and increase access to a metal central to the global shift towards clean energy and electric vehicles. But the structure of BHP's deal, which required Anglo to unbundle its South African platinum and iron ore businesses, was a major reason for its collapse.

Ajay Gupta's arrest shot in the arm for President Ramaphosa as South Africa votes
Ajay Gupta, one of three infamous Gupta brothers, by Indian authorities is a shot in the arm for South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) and the country's President Cyril Ramaphosa in an election season. ANC is seeking re-election in Wednesday's parliamentary polls and the arrest of Ajay Gupta will enable the current ANC leadership to target former president Jacob Zuma under whose rule the Gupta brothers ran a controversial business empire in South Africa. Zuma is accused of backing the Gupta brothers in lieu of personal favours, including financial emoluments. Zuma has formed a separate entity to fight the elections, eyeing to create a rift within ANC supporters and garner votes. This is a high-stakes election for ANC.
