Donald Trump's 100% BRICS Tariff threats: How India could be affected in a renewed trade war
Donald Trump prepares for his second term as US President, his aggressive trade stance is already creating ripples in the global economy. A key element of his protectionist policies is the threat of imposing 100% tariffs on BRICS countries, including India, if they move away from using the US dollar in international transactions. This bold stance, declared through a scathing social media post, could have severe consequences for India’s exports, particularly in critical sectors such as pharmaceuticals, textiles, and information technology. Trump’s remarks come in response to discussions among BRICS nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, regarding the possibility of reducing their reliance on the US dollar for trade. A summit held in Russia in October focused on increasing local currency transactions, a move that Trump has now vowed to challenge. “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER,” Trump wrote, warning that any country attempting to replace the dollar with another currency would face significant tariff hikes. Everything Lalit Modi said on IPL, Dawood Ibrahim and Shah Rukh Khan
Lalit Modi, the visionary founder of the Indian Premier League (IPL), has disclosed that his abrupt exit from India in 2010 was triggered by life-threatening warnings from underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Speaking on Raj Shamani’s Figuring Out podcast, Modi said: “I did leave the country when there was a death threat to me. There was no legal case to start with. Dawood Ibrahim made the threat to me first after IPL-1 because I was also anti-corruption. I didn’t allow any… I was a very strict anti-corruption commissioner.”

The idea of a Brics currency is looking like a charade
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Last month’s Brics summit in Kazan, Russia, was, like all summits, heavy on photo ops. And it yielded a second act that was similarly heavier on symbolism than substance: the release of a report by the Russian finance ministry and central bank on “improvement of the international monetary and financial system," by which Russian officials obviously meant “finding an alternative to the weaponized dollar." Expressions of dissatisfaction with the dominance of the dollar over global money and finance go back at least to French finance minister Valéry Giscard d’Estaing in 1965, who famously lamented the greenback’s “exorbitant privilege." Indeed, the desire for an alternative played no small part in the creation of the euro 34 years later.

Struggling Shafali Verma dropped from Indian women's team for ODI series in Australia next month
Shafali Verma was on Tuesday dropped from India's 16-member women's team for the three-match ODI series in Australia in December after a string of poor performances in the past year. The BCCI selectors seem to have once again lost patience with the 20-year-old right-handed batter, whose recent ODI form has been disappointing. Shafali has scored just 108 runs in six matches this year with 33 being the highest. She was dropped in December last year from the team midway during the home ODI series against Australia on the basis of her poor run, before making a comeback against South Africa in June this year in Bengaluru. In fact, the youngster, rated as the next big thing in Indian women's cricket when she broke into the team in 2021, has not scored a ODI half century since making an unbeaten 71 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in July 2022. Her next highest score was a 49 against the same opponent in the same series.

Global South adversely impacted by crisis caused by global conflicts: PM Modi at G20
PM Narendra Modi while addressing the maiden session of the Rio G20 Summit on Monday pointed out that the countries of the Global South are most adversely impacted by the food, fuel and fertiliser crisis caused by global conflicts (read Ukraine and Gaza) and in that context supported Brazil's initiative for a 'Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty'. Addressing the session titled 'Social Inclusion and the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty', Modi noted that the G20 discussions can only be successful when «we keep in mind the challenges and priorities of the Global South». «This is an important step towards the implementation of the Deccan high-level principles for Food security, adopted at the New Delhi Summit.» Simultaneously, the PM called for reforms of the global institutions which has also been a key priority at the Brics as well as for G20 hosts Brazil and South Africa, among other countries. «And just as we amplified the voice of the Global South by granting permanent membership of G20 to the African Union during the New Delhi Summit, we will reform institutions of global governance.» The second session of the G20 Summit focused on reforms of Global institutions.

Cancer-stricken King Charles unable to control his son Prince William and brother Prince Andrew; here's what reports say
Prince William's insult to ailing King Charles exposed that self-interest is triumphant. Without cunning sons, cunning fathers, cunning uncles, brothers, friends, dukes, earls, French cousins, and some queens' Machiavellian boyfriends vying for control of the throne, British royal history would be incomplete. However, witnessing it firsthand is a completely different matter, as quoted in a report by The New York Post. Only this week has Prince William gone out and done a significant new interview regarding his style of governance, effectively throwing his beloved father, King Charles, under a London bus and implying that his reign is a bit of a farce.
