Sensex, Nifty off to muted start as bulls take breather after 13-day-long run
Nifty were trading flat on Tuesday morning in the absence of any major triggers. However, a 3-5% rally in defence stocks like HAL, GRSE, and Mazagon Dock cheered retail investors. The rally in defence stocks came after the Cabinet Committee on Security cleared a Rs 26,000 crore deal for the procurement of 240 aero-engines for Sukhoi-30MKI fighter jets.

North Korea shows new drone attacking a target as Seoul and US hold large military exercises
Kim Jong Un supervised a demonstration of new exploding drones designed to crash into targets, state media said Monday, as the U.S. and South Korea engage in joint military drills. North Korean test photos showed a white drone with X-shaped tails and wings supposedly crashing into and destroying a target resembling South Korea's main K-2 battle tank. Most combat drones stand off from targets and fire missiles. The North's official Korean Central News Agency said Saturday's test involved various types of drones built to fly different ranges to attack enemy targets on land and sea and flew along various routes before accurately hitting test targets. After the test, Kim pledged to spur the development of drones that explode on impact, conduct reconnaissance or attack targets underwater to boost his country's war readiness, saying the North's military should be equipped with advanced drones «as early as possible,» KCNA said.

Asia manufacturing PMIs show some weak spots but keep signaling growth
Asia’s latest factory activity data showed some loss of momentum midway through the third quarter, but a broad continuation of growth in output and orders. Views among manufacturers on the sector’s outlook were mixed amid uneven price and demand developments through the region, though many were cautiously upbeat. S&P Global’s manufacturing purchasing managers index readings for Japan and South Korea signaled improvement in August, while those for India, Thailand, Taiwan and Malaysia indicated expansions in manufacturing, though at a slower pace.

Why South Korean pop culture rocks and North Korea’s does not
Godzilla-style monster flick. Kim Jong Un, the current ruler, demands “masterpieces pulsating with the sentiment of the times", by which he means praise for himself. The president of South Korea probably has views on the arts, too.

South Korean children sued the government over climate policy. They just won.
SEOUL—Dozens of South Korean children sued their government over inadequate policies targeting climate change, arguing their rights to live in a clean environment had been violated. On Thursday, they earned a major legal victory. South Korea, home to major semiconductor, battery and electric-vehicle makers, has pledged by the end of this decade to reduce carbon emissions by 40% from a 2018 benchmark.

EV expansion in India is linked to battery safety and efficiency, say experts
Electric vehicles (EVs) have become popular because of several reasons, including zero tailpipe emission, which reduces pollution, and gives better fuel efficiency, which keeps customers’ expenses down. According to the latest Vahan data, EV sales stood at 178,948 units in July, marking a strong year-on-year increase of 53%. This is also the second-best performing month for EV sales in the calendar year to date, after March of FY2024 at 213,036 units, showing buoyant interest among buyers. However, EVs have also been in the news every now and then for catching fires and other problems. These raise significant concerns about the trustworthiness of EV technology, depressing its growth in India.
