After the OceanGate implosion, the ultra wealthy still can’t resist the deep sea
THE OCEAN FLOOR off the coast of Sebastian, Florida, is littered with untold fortunes. For three centuries now, the sea has turned the gold and silver coins of the doomed Spanish treasure fleet over and over among strands of flowing seaweed and beneath the claws of scuttling crabs. Twenty miles inland, plunked on an unassuming industrial lot amid a swampy expanse, lie vessels capable of surfacing that sunken bounty.

Sindhu signs off with runner-up finish at Malaysia Masters
PV Sindhu's wait for a much-needed title extended further as she faltered in the finishing line, going down in three games to world no. 7 Wang Zhi Yi of China in the summit clash on Sunday. Fifth seed Sindhu, a double Olympic medallist, last won the Singapore Open and Commonwealth Games in 2022 and finished runner-up at the Madrid Spain Masters in 2023. The title here looked within her reach when world no. 15 Sindhu held a massive 11-3 lead in the decider after winning the opening game but the former world champion imploded after the final change of sides to go down 21-16 5-21 16-21 in a 79-minute women's singles final. The title would have been an icing on the cake but her impressive run to the final will still give her a lot of confidence as Sindhu looks to put the finishing touches ahead of the Paris Olympics. It was her first final on BWF world tour after more than a year.

Schengen visas get costlier by 12% after European Union hikes fee
European Commission is set to increase Schengen visa fees from June 11, 2024. Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs confirmed that while visa fees for adults will increase from €80 to €90 for adult applicants beginning, visas for children aged six to twelve will also increase, from €40 to €45. Furthermore, countries not cooperating with the readmission of their irregularly staying citizens in the EU may face visa fees rising to €135 or €180. «The European Commission adopted a decision to increase short stay Schengen visa (visa type C) fees worldwide by 12 per cent. The increase will apply worldwide as of 11 June 2024,» the Slovenian government said in a statement. The fee increase follows a review of EU visa fees in December 2023, which occurs every three years as mandated by the Schengen Visa Code. The EU cites inflation and civil servants' salaries as reasons for the hike. The last increase was in February 2020 when fees rose from €60 to €80.
