Canada among new countries to pass crucial tipping point that triggers mass EV adoption
Convincing everyone to adopt a new technology can be a slog at first. The humble microwave oven, for example, took two decades of lukewarm sales to reach just a tenth of U.S. households. But then came the 1980s, and quicker than you could say “Hot Pockets,” microwaves had spread to nearly every kitchen.

Why Europe is a magnet for more Americans
“The American". Rich, self-made and free of class prejudice, Newman moves to Paris for fun, only to be sucked into the intrigues of the French aristocracy. The template still describes one type of American expat: the well-off innocent who comes to Europe for amusement or edification.

Womansplained, once and for all
iAy, caramba! It turns out we got mansplained last week, and are worse for the wear for it. Last Saturday, fed by a quote that turned out to be as reliable as a north Delhi dhaba-made paella, we wrote a JIJ (bit.ly/3PaAdF7) ostentatiously titled, 'A kiss is, indeed, just a kiss, even in Spain.' Nope.

Women’s tennis: A small step at the US Open 50 years ago was a giant leap
Women’s tennis was luckier. It had a King. It is 50 years since women’s tennis scored its first victory in pay equality. In 1973, the US Open became the first Grand Slam to announce equal prize money for men and women. In 1968, Billie Jean King had won the first Open era Wimbledon women’s title and received £750 for it while her ‘counterpart’ Rod Laver took home £2,000. In 1970, she and eight other US women players broke away from the US tennis tour over equal pay demand. They created Virginia Slims Invitational circuit. But things didn’t change. In 1972, the US Open men’s singles champion Ilie Nastase received $25,000. The women’s winner, King, got $10,000. The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) was launched in 1973 and King threatened to boycott the US Open until the pay was equalised. And it was!

Jennifer Hermoso, Spain’s player who was a member of the team that won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, has said that she did at no point consent to an unwanted kiss planted on her lips. Spanish soccer player says a kiss on the lips with federation president was not consensual
Jenni Hermoso was consensual, an assertion that Hermoso strongly denied. Meanwhile, all 22 of Hermoso's fellow world champions, and 58 other Spanish players, announced they will no longer play for Spain if Luis Rubiales doesn't resign. Facing his possible removal from office, the 46-year-old Rubiales cast himself as the victim at an emergency meeting of the federation in Madrid. «I won't resign,» he declared four times in quick succession, to applause from the overwhelmingly male audience. Rubiales, who was also chastised for grabbing his crotch after Spain's 1-0 victory over England on Sunday, is under immense pressure to leave his post. The kiss marred the title celebrations in front of a global audience, and criticism has steadily mounted. Spain's acting prime minister, players unions, players for Spain's women's team, and even some players on men's teams have said he must go. Several Spanish news media outlets reported on Thursday that Rubiales would step down.

Your ultimate European summer planned: 36 hours in Palermo, Italy
Italy," reads stenciled graffiti around Palermo, a sign that some in the Sicilian capital view the city as both a physical and cultural outlier from the mainland. Influenced by Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Spanish conquerors, the port city has long been known for its distinctive dialect, original street food, medieval churches, faded Baroque buildings and — less happily — a historical association with the Mafia. But recent years have seen remarkable developments: Ambitious restaurants, a crop of natural wine bars and compelling new museums have upped the profile and allure of Palermo, whose historical intrigue and low prices (relative to north and central Italy) remain largely intact. These places also provide refuges from the heat — Palermo has had a scorching summer that ignited deadly wildfires, now under control, around the region. ITINERARYFriday4 p.m. | See art in a palace
