Jennifer Hermoso, Spain’s player who was a member of the team that won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, has said that she did at no point consent to an unwanted kiss planted on her lips. She also said that she has been under constant pressure to issue a statement justifying the forced kiss at the end of the World Cup final.
Luis Rubiales, the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, forcefully kissed Hermoso on her lips when she stood up to collect the medal. Later he said that he took consent before kissing the Spanish star. He has refused to resign.
Speaking at the federation’s Extraordinary General Assembly on Friday, Luis Rubiales said that the kiss was ‘mutual’, and he was a victim of ‘an unjust campaign’ and ‘fake fiminism’. He also vowed to fight this to the end.
Contrary to this claim, Jennifer Hermoso has said that she did not like the kiss and she did not expect it. She said on a social media platform, “I felt vulnerable and a victim of an impulse-driven, sexist, out-of-place act without any consent on my part. Simply put I was not respected.”
In a statement posted on her X account, the Spanish star said, “No woman should see herself needing to answer questions based on the blunt images that the entire world has seen and, of course, no one should be involved in attitudes without consent.”
