Dozens dead and millions without power after Helene's deadly march across southeastern US
Hurricane Helene caused dozens of deaths and billions of dollars of destruction across a wide swath of the southeastern U.S. as it raced through, and more than 3 million customers went into the weekend without any power and for some a continued threat of floods. Helene blew ashore in Florida's Big Bend region as a Category 4 hurricane late Thursday packing winds of 140 mph (225 kph) and then quickly moved through Georgia, the Carolinas and Tennessee, uprooting trees, splintering homes and sending creeks and rivers over their banks and straining dams. Western North Carolina was essentially cut off because or landslides and flooding that forced the closure of Interstate 40 and other roads. There were hundreds of water rescues, none more dramatic than in rural Unicoi County in East Tennessee, where dozens of patients and staff were plucked by helicopter from the roof of a hospital that was surrounded by water from a flooded river.

Hurricane Helene threatens 'unsurvivable' storm surge and vast inland damage, forecasters say
Hurricane Helene was advancing Thursday across the Gulf of Mexico toward Florida, threatening an «unsurvivable» storm surge in northwestern parts of the state as well as damaging winds, rains and flash floods hundreds of miles inland across much of the southeastern U.S., the National Weather Service in Tallahassee said. Helene is expected to be a major hurricane — meaning a Category 3 or higher — when it makes landfall on Florida's northwestern coast Thursday evening. As of early Thursday, hurricane warnings and flash flood warnings extended far beyond the coast up into south-central Georgia. The governors of Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas have all declared emergencies in their states. The weather service forecast storm surges of up to 20 feet (6 meters) and warned they could be particularly «catastrophic and life-threatening» in Florida's Apalachee Bay. It added that high winds and heavy rains also posed risks.

House panel investigating Donald Trump assassination attempts is set to hold its first hearing
The panel — comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats — has spent the last two months trying to decipher the security failures that allowed a gunman to scale a roof and open fire at the former president during a July 13 campaign rally in Pennsylvania, killing a spectator. Now they are also investigating this month's Secret Service arrest of a man with a rifle on Trump's Florida golf course who also allegedly sought to assassinate the GOP presidential nominee. The suspect in the second assassination attempt, Ryan Wesley Routh, was allegedly aiming a rifle through the shrubbery surrounding Trump's West Palm Beach golf course when he was detected by a Secret Service agent. The agent opened fire and Routh fled before being apprehended by local authorities.

As Hurricane Helene approaches Florida, a federal emergency has been declared.
Florida has declared a state of emergency and is undergoing evacuations as Hurricane Helene approaches. Numerous counties, including Hillsborough and Pinellas, declared the closure of their schools. Several counties, including Sarasota and Charlotte, are under an order of evacuation. It is advised that those in the storm's possible path should be ready for a week or more without power. A state of emergency was proclaimed for almost the whole state by Governor Ron DeSantis. In a Tuesday news briefing, Governor Ron DeSantis stated that people still have time to prepare, review their hurricane plan, and make sure that they are executing their hurricane preparedness plan. Impacts might reach even farther, even if the storm is predicted to make landfall either in the Florida Panhandle or near the northern Gulf Coast. It is advised that residents in the possible path should get ready to go up to a week without power. Also Read :Julie Chrisley sent to 7 years in jail. Here's what has happened
