Williams Compilation Highways President track country reports China owed more than $1 trillion in Belt and Road debt: report
China is owed more than a trillion dollars through its Belt and Road project, making it the biggest debt collector in the world, a report said this week, with an estimated 80 percent of the loans supporting countries in financial distress. Beijing says upwards of 150 countries stretching from Uruguay to Sri Lanka have signed up to the BRI, a vast global infrastructure push unveiled by President Xi Jinping a decade ago. The first decade of the initiative saw China distribute huge loans to fund the construction of bridges, ports and highways in low and middle-income countries. But much more than half of those loans have now entered their principal repayment period, said a report released Monday by AidData, a research institute tracking development finance at Virginia's College of William and Mary. That figure is set to hit 75 percent by the end of the decade, it added. Crunching data compiled on Chinese financing of almost 21,000 projects across 165 countries, AidData said Beijing had now committed aid and credit «hovering around $80 billion a year» to low and middle-income nations. The United States, in contrast, has provided $60 billion to such countries a year. «Beijing is navigating an unfamiliar and uncomfortable role — as the world's largest official debt collector,» the report said.

Action Exodus Death The World to Israel: After Gaza, what?
military action that became inevitable given the remorseless logic created by the October 7 attacks by Hamas that killed some 1,400 Israelis. Given the magnitude of that move, Israel had no option but to attack Gaza with stated maximalist aims: the elimination of Hamas. Considering the militant organisation runs the densely populated territory — it's more Taliban than the Islamic State, in this respect — civilian casualties are sadly inevitable as Israel follows its goal of uprooting it.

Target Reuters Southern Death President country reports Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah to break silence on Israel-Hamas war
Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah on Friday will break weeks of silence since war broke out between Hamas and Israel, in a speech that could impact the region as the Gaza conflict rages. After Hamas militants launched an unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip, Lebanon's southern border has seen escalating tit-for-tat exchanges, mainly between Israel and Hezbollah, an ally of the Palestinian group, stoking fears of a broader conflagration. The cross-border attacks heated up Thursday, as Israel responded with a «broad assault» after Hezbollah attacked 19 Israeli positions simultaneously, according to the group. Rockets also hit the Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona near the border in a barrage claimed by the Lebanese section of Hamas's armed wing. Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian has warned that «the region is like a powder keg» and that «anything is possible» if Israel does not stop attacking Gaza. US President Joe Biden has sent two aircraft carrier groups to the eastern Mediterranean and warned Hezbollah and others to stay out of the conflict. «We've got significant national security interests at play here,» US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters. «I don't believe we've seen any indication yet specifically that Hezbollah is ready to go in full force.
