25 arrested at University of Virginia after police clash with pro-Palestinian protesters
protesters who refused to remove tents from campus, and demonstrators at the University of Michigan chanted anti-war messages and waved flags during commencement ceremonies. In Virginia, student demonstrators began their protest on a lawn outside the school chapel Tuesday. On Saturday, video from WVAW-TV showed police wearing heavy gear and holding shields lined up on the campus in Charlottesville. Protesters chanted «Free Palestine,» and university police said on the social platform X that an «unlawful assembly» had been declared in the area. As police moved in, students were pushed to the ground, pulled by their arms and sprayed with a chemical irritant, Laura Goldblatt, an assistant professor of English and global studies who has been helping student demonstrators, told The Washington Post.

Large numbers of New York City police officers begin entering Columbia University campus
New York City police officers began entering the Columbia University late Tuesday as dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters remained on the campus. Shortly before officers entered the campus, the New York Police Department received a notice from Columbia authorising officers to take action, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official was not authorised to discuss details of the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity. After entering the campus, a contingent of police officers approached Hamilton Hall, the administration building that students began occupying in the morning.

How Chinese networks clean dirty money on a vast scale
American Intelligence Journal, Virginia Kent of the State Department and Robert Gay of the National Intelligence University in Maryland wrote of a “bloodless coup" by Chinese money-handling organisations, noting how, in recent years, they have largely displaced home-grown ones in Mexico that were previously used for this purpose. The authors (expressing their personal views) called these Chinese operators “a new and more challenging money-laundering foe". The American government has been sounding the alarm.

US senators object to wheat, rice subsidies in India; USTR says market access to India has improved
India has opened up its market to the American farming industry in as many as 12 different categories, a top Biden administration trade official told lawmakers on Wednesday as some influential senators raised the issue of wheat and rice subsidies in India and alleged forced labour in the country's shrimp industry. US Trade Representative (USTR) Katherine Tie, responding to a series of questions from the senators during a congressional hearing on trade convened by the US Finance Committee, defended the Biden administration's actions. «We are opening markets for hard-working American families and communities, especially our rural communities. Through negotiations, our administration has secured over USD 21 billion in new agricultural market access in the last three years,» she said. «For example, after the US and India terminated seven WTO disputes, India agreed to remove retaliatory tariffs on several US products. This means improved access for chickpeas, lentils, almonds, walnuts and apples, benefiting farmers across our country, including in Michigan, Oregon, California and Washington,» Tie said.

India opened up its market for US: Biden administration
India opened up its market for several US products which have benefitted American farmers, a top Biden administration official told lawmakers on Tuesday. The steps taken by India have given more market access for turkey, duck, blueberries, and cranberries benefiting farmers from several American states, US Trade Representative Katherine Tai told members of the House Committee on Ways and Means on President Biden's 2024 Trade Policy Agenda. «Last June, India and the United States terminated six WTO disputes, and India agreed to remove retaliatory tariffs on several US products,» Tai said. «This means improved access for chickpeas, lentils, almonds, walnuts, and apples benefiting farmers across the country, including in Michigan, Oregon, and Washington,» she said.

Big tech is downsizing work space in another blow to office real estate
Big technology companies are cutting back on office space across major coastal cities, leaving some exposed landlords with empty buildings and steep losses. The pullback marks a sharp reversal after years when companies such as Amazon.com, Meta Platforms’ Facebook and Google parent Alphabet had been bolstering their office footprints by adding millions of square feet of space. Their expansion continued even after the pandemic erupted and many employees started working remotely.
