Chinese hackers likely to target 18th Lok Sabha polls using AI, says Microsoft report
Lok Sabha polls, Chinese cyber and influence operatives, along with North Korean cyber agents may divert their efforts with these electoral processes, ToI reported quoting a Microsoft analysis. Starting from April 19 to June 1, India will cast their vote to choose 543 members of the Lower House of the Parliament.. The general election polls will be held in seven phases: April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1, with Bihar, West Bengal, and Uttar Pradesh conducting voting across all seven stages. The results will be announced on June 4, 2024. «China will, at a minimum, create and amplify AI-generated content that benefits their positions in these high-profile elections. While the impact of such content in swaying audiences remains low, China’s increasing experimentation in augmenting memes, videos, and audio will continue—and may prove effective down the line,» the Microsoft analysis claimed.

Chip off the old Taiwanese block
earthquake off Taiwan's east coast on Wednesday is unfortunate. It is also an unfortunate reminder of the risk of concentrating an overwhelming proportion of the world's most advanced chip-making capacity in one territory. Taiwan's semiconductor fabrication units are located at some distance from the epicentre of the earthquake and evacuated staff in response to disaster protocols. Initial reports suggest there is unlikely to be an immediate impact on supply chains feeding all manner of things from cars and cellphones to laptops and satellites. However, chip-making is particularly susceptible to vibration, and Taiwan lies in a zone of heightened seismic activity that also poses a risk to its principal source of power: nuclear energy. Chipmakers have accelerated plans to diversify beyond Taiwan after the Covid outbreak snarled up supply lines. There is also simmering tension with China that reinforces the need for resilient supply of a critical component in global manufacturing.

It’s hardware — not software — that is again emerging as the dominant species in the AI age
Software Is Eating the World'. He convincingly argued that software-led companies like Apple, Amazon and Netflix were 'eating' brick-and-mortar companies, such as Blockbuster, Borders and Walmart, to become global category leaders. Andreessen's predictions did bear out, with software behemoths like Alphabet, Microsoft and Meta becoming the world's largest companies. As the age of IT and software gives way to AI, there are declarations of how AI is eating software. It seems that new emerging titans like OpenAI and their LLMs — which are built on colossal amounts of data and powered by new kinds of software algorithms called transformers — are taking over. However, it's actually hardware that is again emerging as the dominant species in the AI age. Nvidia, US-based MNC and maker of GPUs (graphics processing units), the hardware that powers most generative AI software, was at a $300 bn valuation in the pre-ChatGPT era in Nov 2022. It is $2.3 tn today, a nearly eight-fold jump.

China not to 'sit on its hands' if Taiwan independence forces step up their separatist activities: Xi tells Biden
Xi Jinping has told his US counterpart Joe Biden that the Taiwan question is the «first red line» that must not be crossed by Washington, and warned that Beijing will not «sit on its hands» if "Taiwan independence" forces step up their "separatist activities" with the help of external elements. Biden spoke on the phone with Xi on Tuesday, marking the first conversation between the two leaders since their historic in-person summit last November in San Francisco and the latest in ongoing efforts by US and Chinese officials to defuse tensions between the two countries. The White House described the one-hour-45-minute conversation as «candid and constructive» on a range of issues on which the leaders agreed and disagreed. Biden stressed the need to maintain «peace and stability» across the Taiwan Strait and he also raised his concerns over China's support for Russia's defence industry, the White House said.

Taiwan earthquake tests readiness of world’s chip-making hub
The world’s most important semiconductor-manufacturing hub is also one of the world’s biggest earthquake hot spots, and it was put to the test Wednesday after a powerful quake. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing—which makes chips for customers such as Apple and occupies a critical place in the global electronics supply chain—has prepared for years for a quake, drawing on lessons from a 2011 disaster in Japan among others. TSMC briefly evacuated some of its locations Wednesday and suspended work at some plants after an estimated 7.4-magnitude quake struck eastern Taiwan.
