View: Govt must address geographical diversification in the chip sector
Industrial policy is once again gaining favour worldwide. Whether through the US' Inflation Reduction Act 2022 or the Mario Draghi report for the EU, 'EU Competitiveness: Looking Ahead', the West — the traditional stronghold of market-driven economies — appears to have embraced state intervention. Even IMF, in its World Economic Outlook 2024, acknowledges that industrial policy can be used to address market failures. Against this backdrop, GoI efforts to establish a domestic semiconductor chip design and production ecosystem deserve closer scrutiny.

Towering ambitions: Foxconn's expanding footprint in India
iPhone or very soon even the Google Pixel that amps up your swag quotient might owe its existence to a Foxconn shopfloor. And yet, the story began rather modestly in India, 18 years ago. Get geo-savvy: Let’s use today’s geopolitical chaos to uplift India’s economy

They refuse, they cling to the realm or the gods or love. Illusions. Only the ladder is real. The climb is all there is.—Petyr ‘Littlefinger’ Baelish The previous part of this article discussed how many economic miracles have been midwifed amid the chaos of global geopolitics.

US nuclear expansion unlikely to deter China: Study
Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has revealed that increasing US nuclear capabilities would not deter China from employing atomic weapons in a conflict over Taiwan, Taipei Times reported. The findings, published in a report on Friday, challenge current calls among policy experts to expand and modernise the US nuclear arsenal in response to China's growing military strength. The table top exercise, described as the first large-scale unclassified simulation of a potential nuclear war over Taiwan, explored scenarios where nuclear weapons might be used. According to the report, the US's nuclear capabilities, beyond ongoing modernisation efforts, had minimal impact on Beijing's willingness to deploy nuclear arms. Instead, the exercise highlighted the conditions under which either side might face pressure to resort to nuclear strikes, rather than the likelihood of such weapons being used.
