The great holiday rush: This New Year season, Indians are travelling like never before, and the world opens up to them
Christmas and year-end season? Pretty much everywhere! Going by most accounts, the October to December quarter this year is likely to be a bumper quarter for the travel and hospitality sector with most companies claiming to have an even better momentum than in 2019. «There is a lot of talk about high airfares but the important thing to note is that people are travelling,» said Rajesh Magow, cofounder and group CEO of MakeMyTrip. «Typically, international travel bookings, even for short-haul travel, are made a couple of weeks or more in advance. However, with markets such as Thailand and others making the entry process a lot easier, we are seeing advance purchase windows for these destinations becoming shorter, in many cases, stretching to a couple of days,» he said. As per MakeMyTrip data, the top destinations for the last week of December in the domestic sector include Goa, Rajasthan, Varanasi, Kerala, Rishikesh and Kashmir. In terms of international flight bookings, popular destinations such as the UAE, Thailand, Singapore, and Indonesia continue to be favourites.

Ross McKitrick: The only thing wrong with the globalist climate agenda — the people won’t have it
It’s tempting to dismiss the outcome of COP28, the recent United Nations climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates, as mere verbiage, especially the “historic” UAE Consensus about transitioning away from fossil fuels. After all, this is the 28th such conference and the previous ones all pretty much came to nothing. On a chart showing the steady rise in global CO2emissions since 1950 you cannot spot when the 1997 Kyoto Protocol entered into force (2002), with its supposedly historic language binding developed countries to cap their CO2 emissions at five per cent below 1990 levels by 2012, which they didn’t do. The 2015 Paris Agreement also contained “historic” language that bound countries to further deep emission reductions. Yet the COP28 declaration begins with an admission that the parties are not on track for compliance.

Asia feels the sting of India's onion export ban
Asian buyers, who are scrambling for cheaper alternatives, particularly as New Delhi is unlikely to lift the curbs before general elections next year. The world's biggest exporter of onions banned shipments on Dec. 8 after domestic prices more than doubled in three months following a drop in production. Now retail shoppers from Kathmandu to Colombo are struggling with high prices, since traditional Asian buyers, such as Bangladesh, Malaysia and Nepal, and even the United Arab Emirates, rely on imports from India to bridge domestic gaps.

In a first, COP28 targets the root cause of climate change
As activists and diplomats first assembled in Dubai for Cop28, the UN’s climate summit, a fortnight ago, the chances of significant progress seemed slim. War had returned to the Middle East and the geopolitical order was fragmenting. The choice of the summit’s host country—the United Arab Emirates, one of the world’s leading petrostates—and its chairman, Sultan al-Jaber, the head of its national oil company, threatened to turn the event into a giant exercise in greenwashing.

Debt Box vs SEC: Court Reverses Asset Freeze, Raises Questions on SEC's Conduct
The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed a complaint against Debt Box and other defendants, alleging that the firm was engaged in a fraudulent conspiracy to offer unregistered securities to investors. The action is being brought against Debt Box and other defendants. In August of 2023, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) won a temporary asset freeze and restraining order against Debt Box, its four proprietors, and thirteen additional defendants. The SEC said that the scam was responsible for the raising of about fifty million dollars, in addition to undefined sums of Bitcoin and Ether. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Debt Box was accused of selling «node licenses» that were represented as a mechanism to earn crypto asset tokens via mining operations. However, the SEC said that these «node licenses» were, in fact, a counterfeit.

How COP28 failed the world's small islands
This was met by a sense of déjà vu among delegates of the Alliance of Small Island States (Aosis), an intergovernmental organisation representing the nations most vulnerable to climate change. In her post-summit statement, Aosis lead negotiator Anne Rasmussen expressed confusion that the UAE Consensus, COP28's final agreement, was approved when representatives from small island developing states (or Sids were not in the room. While some delegates hailed the consensus as «beginning of the end» of the fossil fuel era, Aosis countered that the document contained a «litany of loopholes» which did little to advance the key actions needed to stave off climate breakdown and deliver justice to islands and low-lying states facing the gravest consequences of the climate crisis. Aosis member states came to COP28 to build on the momentum of their victory in the final moments of COP27 a year earlier in Egypt, when delegates agreed to establish a loss and damage fund which would pay developing nations for the unavoidable and extreme consequences of climate change. The group had fought over 30 years in climate negotiations for this fund. Additionally, Aosis identified fundamental areas required to save Sids from impacts such as sea-level rise, desertification and climate migration.
