African crude makes up for fall in Russian imports
India's increased intake of African oil helped partly offset the 18% month-on-month import decline from its top supplier Russia in December, according to energy cargo tracker Vortexa. Russia's share in India's imported crude market shrank to 30% in December from 34.5% in November. Africa's share increased to 7.6% from 4.7%.

Mahadev app case: ED files fresh charge sheet in money laundering matter
Enforcement Directorate has filed a fresh charge sheet before a special court in Raipur in a money laundering case investigation linked to alleged illegal betting and gaming through the Mahadev online book app, official sources said Thursday. The federal agency will share this second prosecution complaint (charge sheet) with authorities in Dubai to secure either the deportation or extradition of the two main promoters of the app-- Ravi Uppal and Sourabh Chandrakar, they said.

India runs trade deficit with 9/10 top partners
India recorded a trade deficit with nine of its top ten trade partners in the first seven months of 2023-24, with the US being the only country with which exports exceeded imports. India's trade surplus with the US — its largest trading partner — was $19.59 billion in the April-October period, show data from the commerce and industry ministry. However, with China, the second largest partner, the deficit was a whopping $51.11 billion, followed by a $33.56 billion gap with Russia, the fourth largest trade partner of India.

Large international banks ask many Indian HNIs to close accounts
RBI) on keeping idle funds abroad, is forcing them to close their overseas bank accounts. At least two large British banks, one Swiss lender and a leading Emirates financial institution have snapped their relationships with more than two dozen resident Indians in the past two months, according to service providers and tax practitioners advising these individuals. They had opened the bank accounts by transferring funds overseas under the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS) which allows a local person to invest up to $250,000 a year in stocks, properties, and for maintenance of relatives among other things.
