Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates' (UAE) central banks are looking to collaborate on cryptocurrency regulations and financial technology development.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently published a white paper titled «Pathways to the Regulation of Crypto-Assets: A Global Approach,» advocating for a collaborative approach towards crypto regulation on a global scale.

Major trading firms in the United States, such as Jane Street Group and Jump Trading, are scaling back their involvement in the domestic crypto markets due to increasing regulatory uncertainties and associated risks. This retreat is causing a significant void in the once vibrant U.S. crypto landscape, which could deter interest from institutional investors.

Despite a «wild year» of scandal and failure in 2022 when the FTX exchange and a number of crypto dealers collapsed, Peter Smith, chief executive of London-based Blockchain.com, told the Qatar Economic Forum that there is now «real growth» in the crypto community. Smith, who said nearly a decade as head of Blockchain.com had left him with «no nerve endings», told how other countries were taking advantage of the void left by the US where some regulators were «openly negative about crypto». While some US legislators want to see rules for a cryptocurrency market, regulators there have taken a tough line because of fears of money laundering and scams such as the FTX collapse. Former FTX chief Sam Bankman-Fried is due to go on trial in New York in October.

Executives from the US-based cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, including CEO Brian Armstrong, have visited the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to explore the potential for crypto operations in the region. The visit comes as Coinbase seeks to expand its international presence and establish strategic hubs in key locations around the world.

US fintech firm Ripple has bought shares in the European crypto exchange Bitstamp, taking another step on its journey to expand internationally.
