ETMarkets Smart Talk: Gold and Silver in 2025: Investment insights from Deepak Ramaraju
“Both gold and silver have gained ~30% over the last one-year period. Global uncertainties including the US election led to a rally in gold as it is considered as a safe haven,” says Deepak Ramaraju, Senior Fund Manager, Shriram AMC. In an interview with ETMarkets, Ramaraju said: “Silver, on the other hand, may witness momentum on the back of its usage in various industrial applications including electronics, solar panels for renewable energy, advanced healthcare and electric vehicles,” Edited excerpts: Geopolitical concerns and political uncertainty in some of the countries weighed on markets in early December. What is your take on the markets? Markets have witnessed several challenges in the recent past — Russia Ukraine war, the escalation of Israel Palestine conflict, the invasion of Syria etc. However, these geo-political conflicts affect the commodity supply chain, currency movement and inflation.

India's import of Russian oil drops in November on shrinking discounts
Russian crude oil dropped in November to its lowest level since June 2022 but the Kremlin continues to be the biggest source of oil for India, according to a monthly tracker report of a European think tank. India became the second biggest buyer of Russian crude oil since Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, with purchases rising from less than one per cent of the total oil imported to almost 40 per cent of the country's total oil purchases. The rise was primarily because the Russian crude oil was available at a discount to other internationally traded oil due to the price cap and the European nations shunning purchases from Moscow. «India's imports of Russian crude oil dropped by a massive 55 per cent in November — the lowest figure since June 2022,» the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA) said its latest report.

Donald Trump and Joe Biden teams are working together. Here's why USA's enemy should fear?
Donald Trump doesn't think much of Joe Biden's foreign policy record. The Republican president-elect frequently casts the outgoing Democratic president as a feckless leader who shredded American credibility around the world during his four-year term, AP reported. But a funny thing happened on Trump's way back to the White House: The Biden and Trump national security teams have come to an understanding that they have no choice but to work together as conflicts in Gaza, Syria and Ukraine have left a significant swath of the world on a knife's edge, as per AP report.

India's economic slowdown: How to keep it at 7-8%
Proximate causes for the slowdown are on the demand side. For several quarters now, growth in private consumption, the biggest component of GDP, has been sluggish. Private investment, the most important driver of GDP, hasn't taken off. Exports have done reasonably well, but are unlikely to be a major engine given the global context of slowdown and trade aversion in the advanced economies. Essentially, the economy was being driven by public investment, which has been pared back a little in the interest of fiscal consolidation. Was that a mistake? No. The public investment-led strategy has been in place for a few years now. It became the prime driver of growth when the banking and corporate sectors were under stress after a period of excess in the late 2000s-early 2010s. Banks needed time to reduce NPAs. Corporate balance sheets had to be deleveraged. That process is complete. The 'shock' effects of Covid and outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war have also abated.

Too many lives are being needlessly wasted, too many families destroyed,» he said, as he called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to act to bring the fighting to an end.
