Acer, known for its laptops and PCs, is expanding into home electronics, with plans to manufacture and export appliances such as water and air purifiers, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners from India, a market that last year became the Taiwanese IT hardware major's second largest for its global operations after the US. Harish Kohli, managing director, Acer India, told ET that the company is already on track to meet the targets for the first year of the revised production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme that started from April 2023 on the back of strong shipments in the commercial space and exports. Civil Society Organisations Sunday said that there is no mandate for the adoption of the proposed agreement on investment facilitation for development (IFD) which is being negotiated by a group of members of the World Trade Organization (WTO), led by China. A WTO decision of 2004 prohibits negotiations on investment facilitation and efforts are on to bring the issue in through plurilateral means. Around 130 members support the pact. The US, Sri Lanka and Pakistan are also not part of this proposed pact. India and South Africa have opposed it as it neither has the WTO mandate or its members’ consensus and cannot be brought to the formal process in the WTO.

India and the United States are expected to hold the Homeland Security Dialogue on February 28, 2024, officials have said. Union home secretary Ajay Bhalla will lead the talks with his US counterpart. The homeland security dialogue was last held in January 2022. According to North Block officials, senior officers from the two sides will participate in the day-long meeting. New Delhi is likely to raise the use of digital space and how it is being exploited by terrorist groups for propagating radical views, recruitment and funding terrorism. The drug seizures by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will be shared by the Indian side seeking cooperation from the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). NCB recently seized drugs worth ₹75 crore following inputs from the US DEA. The mastermind behind an international drug cartel was identified as a Tamil film producer, who is on the run.

Reliance Industries and the Walt Disney Company have signed a binding agreement to merge Viacom18 and Star India, with the deal expected to be announced early this week, people privy to the development told ET. The deal, which has been in the works for over four months, will create India's largest media empire, spanning TV broadcasting, streaming, movies and sports. The two media companies generated revenue of ₹25,000 crore between them in FY23. «The merger deal has finally been signed after months of negotiations. The announcement will happen early this week. It was expected to happen late last week,» a top executive told ET on the condition of anonymity. According to another person, Reliance may own 61% of the proposed combined company, with Disney holding 33% and Bodhi Tree Systems having the remaining 6%.

Israeli military offensive in the southernmost city of Rafah could be «delayed somewhat» if a deal for a weekslong cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is reached, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday, but claimed that total victory in Gaza is «weeks away» once the offensive begins. Netanyahu confirmed to CBS that a deal is in the works, with no details. Israeli media reported that mediators were making progress on an agreement for a cease-fire and release of dozens of hostages held in Gaza as well as Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Several Israeli media outlets, citing unnamed officials, said the War Cabinet tacitly approved it. Talks resumed on Sunday in Qatar at the specialist level, Egypt's state-run Al Qahera TV reported, citing an Egyptian official as saying further discussions would follow in Cairo with the aim of achieving the cease-fire and release. Meanwhile, Israel is developing plans for expanding its offensive against the Hamas militant group to Rafah on the Gaza-Egypt border, where more than half the besieged territory's population of 2.3 million have sought refuge.

United States said Sunday that multinational talks in Paris came to an «understanding» on a possible deal for Hamas to release hostages and for a new ceasefire in the Gaza war. An Israeli delegation led by Mossad chief David Barnea was in the French capital on Friday to discuss a deal to ensure a fresh ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel.
