The right bet: Rakesh Jhunjhunwala's dream is set to soar higher
Ryanair, of low cost and sustained profitability, India’s newest airline Akasa Air’s journey to the top of the charts has been rather astounding. The airline, backed by legendary investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala, who died soon after the launch of the airline in August 2022, is set to cross a milestone. It will fly beyond the Indian borders from March 28 with its first international flight scheduled to Qatar. Notably, this achievement comes in merely 19 months of its going operational. Akasa was granted the licence to fly internationally by the Ministry of Civil Aviation last year on September 20. Exiting 2023 with a fleet size of 22 aircraft, including 21 Boeing 737 MAX 8 and one Boeing 737 MAX 8 200, the first of its kind in Asia, Akasa Air is ready for its next phase of growth. It further fuelled its international flying ambitions when in January the new airline welcomed two Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to its growing fleet. Since it started flying in 2022, Akasa has garnered a market share of 4 per cent as against another low-cost but much older airline SpiceJet's 5.6%. The Indian aviation market is dominated by IndiGo, which has a nearly 60 per cent market share, and the Tata Group whose airlines have a combined share of nearly 26 per cent.

India set for strong growth in FY25 amid global headwinds: Finance ministry
NEW DELHI : India’s economy is performing well, with risks evenly balanced, to achieve 7% growth in FY25, but geopolitical tensions and geo-economic fragmentation pose risks to the country’s growth, the finance ministry said in its latest monthly economic review. In its economic review for January, the ministry said risks to global trade, including a spike in commodity prices due to the Houthi militant group’s attacks on important trade routes in the Red Sea region, have resulted in supply chain disruptions.

The planet needs solar power. Can we build it without harming nature?
But for a nation racing to adopt renewable energy, the land is prime for something else: solar panels. The sun shines strong, the terrain is flat and high-voltage transmission lines are in place from a decommissioned coal plant. Energy collected here could speed to major metropolitan regions across the West, part of a colossal wave of clean power needed to stave off the worst effects of global warming. Animals need humans to solve climate change. But they also need places to live. Loss of habitat is the top driver of a staggering global decline in biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth. The boom in solar power, set to be the fastest-growing energy source in the United States, is predicted to fence off millions of acres across the nation, blanketing them in rows of glassy squares.

WTO meet: India to oppose no customs duty policy on ecomm transmissions
India will not support further continuation of prohibition of imposing customs duties on electronic transmissions at the World Trade Organization (WTO), meeting in Abu Dhabi next week, an official said Tuesday, as besides loss of revenue for developing countries, it also constrains their policy space. New Delhi is of the view that e-commerce needs to be looked at from a development dimension and not from the “eyes of big tech companies”.

Russia has never hurt India’s interests: S Jaishankar
Russia has never hurt India’s interests and everyone conducts a relationship based on their past experiences, was External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s straight reply to German economic daily, Handelsblatt. “…The relations of powers like Europe, the US, China or Japan with Russia, they have all seen ups and downs. We have had a stable and always very friendly relationship with Russia. And our relationship with Russia today is based on this experience. For others, things were different, and conflicts may have shaped the relationship. We, on the other hand, had a politically and militarily much more difficult relationship with China, for example,” Jaishankar said, adding,” My point is: just as I do not expect Europe to have a view of China that is identical to mine, Europe should understand that I cannot have a view of Russia that is identical to the European one. Let us accept that there are natural differences in relationships.” The interview was conducted during Jaishankar’s recent visit to Munich.
