Husband wins Rs 12.52 lakh as travel insurance claim after 14 years long fight against the insurer Bajaj Allianz
Bajaj Allianz General Insurance was ordered by the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) via an order dated December 27, 2023 to reimburse $20,000 plus interest to the husband of Mrs Aruna Vaish who took an overseas travel insurance policy from the company. The fight between Bajaj Allianz General Insurance and Mrs Aruna (the insured) started from July 28, 2009 when the overseas travel insurance claim was rejected. After rejection of the insurance claim, Mrs Aruna Vaish filed a complaint with the Insurance Ombudsman. The Insurance Ombudsman via a letter dated October 12, 2011 said that her claim fell outside their jurisdiction. Subsequently, she went to fight her case in the State Consumer Forum and then in NCDRC. In the time between fighting her (Aruna Vaish) case, she had died so her husband Deepak Chandra Vaish fought the long battle against the insurance company on her behalf.

Market going up on hopes of political continuity: Varun Saboo
Varun Saboo, Head-Equities, Anand Rathi Shares, says “rural economy has been doing fine. We have been of the view that the rural economy has continued doing well. It is just that the pricing growth was very strong. Prices of most products have literally doubled in the last three years. All these consumer companies – be it FMCG, be it discretionary names, be it auto companies – have seen a huge inflation. We have seen products going up around 70-80% to about 100%.” What are the return expectations considering this is going to be an eventful year, first half India elections and then second half US? Varun Saboo: If we speak about elections it is better to speak about the India side, at least the results which we saw of the state elections which went by it is kind of getting into a consensus where there is a belief that there will be a strong majority again by the current government coming in. There is a lot of euphoria around it. And that is reflected in our markets.

Asian consumers could soon be paying with stablecoins
crypto stablecoins, which advertise tranquility in an ocean of tumult, have hardly lived up to their billing. Not one out of the 68 tokens studied by researchers at the Bank for International Settlements has managed to stay on its peg at all times. Tether and USD Coin, the two largest players, reference their values 1:1 to the dollar, which enables them to act as a bridge of sorts between virtual and real-world representations of money. However, they have very little use outside the domain of crypto trading. For the broader population that doesn’t dabble in Bitcoin or Ether, keeping money in a bank that has deposit insurance has always been a safer option. And yet, despite their well-known infirmities, more stablecoins keep coming. Regulators, too, seem to be more receptive to having them around, despite spectacular blowups like when TerraUSD breached its $1 price target in May 2022 and wiped out about $500 billion from cryptocurrency markets. Circle’s USD Coin briefly lost its peg during the US regional banking crisis of 2023. Still, Hong Kong put out a proposal last week to license stablecoins. Singapore has already announced similar intentions. It’s very likely that before the end of 2024, the two financial centers will have come up with rules that US lawmakers have failed to adopt after three years of efforts.

Tesla weighs smaller batteries for its India car
Mint’s request for comment. Batteries comprise the biggest chunk of an electric vehicle’s (EV) bill of materials, and strapping a smaller battery on a car would be crucial for Tesla to realise a $24,000 (around ₹20 lakh) electric car, which it is reportedly conceptualizing for sale in India and other developing markets. For context, the company’s most affordable car today, the base variant Model 3, starts at around $40,000 ( ₹33 lakh).
