From a three-year view, India’s export story is very much alive: Rana Gupta
Rana Gupta, MD, Manulife Investment Management, says what the Indian government did with Make in India, is in the case where the Indian government is the buyer, whether it is power, railways and all this equipment, they made a local content mandatory. That means the import substitution has to happen. You cannot just import and sell, that was the first phase, that has already happened and happening. The second phase is where we are moving on to now is basically technology absorption. In the second leg that we are going to see investing and deepening valuation within India. First, the import substitution gave the volume. Now that is giving these companies confidence to do value addition, leading to exports. I 2024, global growth is going to slow a bit. But if you take a three-year view, the export story is pretty much alive.” I was just speaking with the head of JCB India head. He was just telling me that we are already the third largest construction equipment market in the world and will move to second largest in the next five-seven years. He also said we have a 20% growth visibility on exports. TRIL, KEI, Apar are saying that there is a major manufacturing capex happening in Europe and the US and India will be the country to feed into that. Are you also convinced on this argument? We have been convinced on this argument for some time.

Stock rally: India’s youth bulge could support higher valuations
BSE Sensex rising above 69,653 on Wednesday—is valid. Foreign institutional investors are back in action as buyers; their dithering in 2022 after yield gaps with safe US debt got squeezed now seems like old hat. An enlarged base of retail investors has held indices up, even as India’s economy has recovered from its covid contraction robustly enough to keep up a relatively pacy trajectory.

Emmy-winning TV Legend Norman Lear, creator of 'All in the Family,' passes away at 101
— Producer-writer Norman Lear, whose groundbreaking hit comedies such as 'All in the Family' and 'Maude' addressed race, abortion and other social issues rarely seen before on U.S. television, died on Tuesday, at the age of 101, his family said. Lear, one of the most influential people in television, died at his Los Angeles home of natural causes, «surrounded by his family as we told stories and sang songs until the very end,» the family said on Facebook on Wednesday. Lear, who won six Emmy Awards for his work in television, was known for his campaigning for liberal causes, including voting rights, and worked well into his 90s. In addition to 'All in the Family' and 'Maude,' Lear dominated American TV screens in the 1970s and '80s with the situation comedies 'Sanford and Son,' 'The Jeffersons,' and the soap opera spoof'Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.' At one point in the 1970s, Lear had eight shows on the air with an estimated 120 million viewers, Time magazine said. By drawing material from social themes of the time, Lear's shows made network executives nervous because they had depth and an air of controversy. «For him to say that he didn't have an impact on not only television but society is… a little too humble,» said Rob Reiner, who had a co-starring role on «All in the Family» before becoming a film director. «I loved Norman Lear with all my heart,» Reiner said on the X social media platform after news of his death.

Raise domestic financing to fund climate action projects: IMF’s Georgieva
Edited excerpts: Yes, it is difficult in a world that has gone from one shot to another with the consequence being fiscal space in countries has shrunk in some countries. The fight against inflation means that interest rates are high, and for countries with a high level of debt that eats up resources. On top of it, with advanced economies now moving towards industrial policy and green subsidies—which overall is a good track to accelerate decarbonization—they become more attractive for private investors because it’s easier to invest in the developed world.

Adani-Hindenburg saga: Sebi issues show-cause notices to FPIs
New Delhi: The stock market regulator has issued show-cause notices to about a dozen foreign investors that owned big chunks of Adani group companies as it seeks to lift the veil on their true ownership, two people aware of the matter said. The notices charge the investors with failing to maintain and disclose information about their ultimate beneficiaries. The Securities and Exchange Board of India’s (Sebi) notices to the foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) follow its investigations after US short-seller Hindenburg Research highlighted them in a damning report released in January.
