State-organised rallies in Iran mark 1979 US embassy seizure, support Gaza
Iran on Saturday marking the 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy with cries of «Death to America» and «Death to Israel» in support of Palestinians under Israeli bombardment in Gaza. Radical Iranian revolutionary students stormed the embassy soon after the fall of the U.S.-backed Shah 44 years ago, holding 52 Americans hostage for 444 days. In Tehran, demonstrators marched on Saturday from Palestine Square in the heart of the capital to the former U.S.

Indian single malts could turn the table on scotch
Indri Diwali Collectors Edition 2023, was named best in show at the Whiskies of the World Awards, beating out competition from better known brands of scotch — as well as American bourbon and single malts from several other countries. And it’s not a one-off, either. In little over a decade, several brands from India have made their way onto the shelves of liquor stores all over the world, sharing counter space with whiskies of long renown that, only half a generation ago, were beyond the reach of most Indians. During my childhood, strict import restrictions meant that Indian scotch drinkers like my father had to depend on smugglers.

raise tariffs. A lot. He has proposed slapping a 10% tariff on all imported goods, thereby trebling the country’s average and taking American trade protectionism back to its mid-20th-century heyday.

Is salt really a new culprit in type 2 diabetes?
type 2 diabetes, they often think of sugar (even though the evidence for that is still not clear). Now, a new study from the US points the finger at salt. The study, conducted by researchers at Tulane University in New Orleans, used data on about 400,000 adults, taken from the UK Biobank study. This observational study followed the participants for nearly twelve years. In that time, around 13,000 developed type 2 diabetes. In a press release, the principal investigator on the study said that «taking the saltshaker off the table can help prevent type 2 diabetes». But is it really as simple as that? For a start, this type of study, called an observational study, cannot prove that one thing causes another, only that one thing is related to another. (There could be other factors at play.) So it is not appropriate to say removing the saltshaker «can help prevent». My colleague Dan Green and I have previously criticised university press releases such as this as they can lead to misleading news stories. The Tulane study can only suggest an association between salt use and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes — nothing more. This is before considering the quality of the data itself. The data used to assess salt use, was based on the simple question: «Do you add salt to your food?» (It specifically excluded salt added in cooking.) The question the participants in the study answered only had the options: «never/rarely», «sometimes», «usually» or «always». This means it is not possible to estimate from the answers how much salt might be associated with an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Sony wants its own executive as head of merged company instead of Zee's Punit Goenka
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) chief Punit Goenka's position as MD and CEO of the proposed Sony-Zee merged entity is on shaky ground as he continues to be under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) for the alleged diversion of funds from ZEEL to promoter entities, people aware of the development told ET. Sony Group Corp, especially sensitive to this shadow over the deal given the stringent corporate governance norms in Japan and the US, is said to be pushing for its longstanding India executive, NP Singh, to become the CEO of the merged entity. Goenka is still the subject of a Sebi investigation, despite the recent relief granted by the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT). While Goenka has received interim relief from the SAT, the order states that he will have to cooperate with Sebi in the probe.
