'Polarization' is Merriam-Webster's 2024 word of the year
«Polarization means division, but it's a very specific kind of division,» said Peter Sokolowski, Merriam-Webster's editor at large, in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press ahead of Monday's announcement. «Polarization means that we are tending toward the extremes rather than toward the center.» The election was so divisive, many American voters went to the polls with a feeling that the opposing candidate was an existential threat to the nation. According to VoteCast, a survey of more than 120,000 voters, about 8 in 10 Kamala Harris voters were very or somewhat concerned that Donald Trump's views — but not Harris' — were too extreme, while about 7 in 10 Trump voters felt the same way about Harris — but not Trump.

Why Johnny Depp's son Jack is working in a bar despite his father's Rs 1,300 crore wealth
Jack Depp, the 22-year-old son of actor Johnny Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis, has been quietly carving his path away from the limelight. Unlike his sister Lily-Rose Melody Depp, who is currently making waves in Hollywood with her role in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu, Jack has embraced a more low-profile existence. Despite his star-studded lineage, Jack has spent time working at a popular Lebanese restaurant, L’Area, in Paris's Bastille district. The trendy eatery, known for its exposed roof rafters, mosaic floors, and eclectic clientele of music, fashion, and film industry elites, including actors like Matt Damon and Matt Dillon, has become a local hotspot. According to Radar Online, Jack worked at the restaurant for two years, showcasing a strong work ethic both behind the bar and in the kitchen, before taking a break earlier this year. L’Area’s owner, Edouard Chueke, has managed the restaurant for over 15 years and revealed that Jack’s family, including his mother Vanessa Paradis and sister Lily-Rose, are frequent visitors. Jack’s mother has long been vocal about protecting her children from the pressures of fame. She has consistently emphasized their right to choose their own paths, away from the spotlight that often comes with having celebrity parents. Jack, who is bilingual and splits his time between

Why Bidenomics let Democrats down despite its focus on helping the US working-class
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. As US president, Joe Biden charted a new economic path for the Democrats by siding unabashedly with the working class and introducing a wide range of industrial policies to reinvigorate US manufacturing, reshore supply chains and promote the green transition. Most of these new policies made economic sense, and like many other progressives, I thought they made political sense as well.

Turning Trump’s tariffs on China into opportunities: These are the Indian products with additional export potential
Donald Trump’s election back into the office has begun with his loud announcements on heightened tariffs which has sparked concerns around the world. He recently targeted Mexico, Canada, and China, stating that if they fail to address the issue of illegal migration and drug smuggling into the US, he will impose a 25% tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico; and “an additional 10% tariff, above any additional tariffs” on goods from China. While Trump has left India out of his initial tariff plans, he has made an announcement that if the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) countries create their own currency or back an existing currency to replace the United States dollar, the US will impose a 100% import tariff on these countries. As the world navigates through a realm of likely scenarios, when it comes to how the US exercises tariffs, there is China and then the rest of the world!

Want a US tourist visa but can’t wait? This is how much it can cost you to cut the visa queue
According to a TOI report, agents, who claim to navigate the system’s quirks, charge Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000 for faster access to visa slots. For applicants with urgent needs, the costs can soar even higher. Shwetang Parikh (name changed), whose appointment was pushed to August 2025, said he paid Rs 75,000 to secure an earlier slot. «It’s frustrating. Despite trying everything, I had no choice but to pay as I needed to travel for work,» he told TOI. Visa consultants reveal that these agents exploit last-minute cancellations and newly opened slots. «Some agents constantly monitor the system to grab earlier appointments, charging hefty fees for the service,» explained a consultant. Social media platforms are rife with advertisements for such expedited services, fueling the trend.

India's luxury property market is a boon to Trump's business
Trump started his first campaign for the presidency, two Trump-branded buildings were going up in India, one in the financial capital of Mumbai and the other nearby in Pune. Before he won in 2016, the Trump Organization expanded its business in India, signing deals in two more big cities. The day after Trump's victory in November, a developer in India told local media about half a dozen new deals. Like the others, Indian companies buy the land, build the high-rises, sell the units and pay a fee to use the Trump name. These deals are putting India even more squarely in the Trump Organization's sights. And with Trump on his way back to the White House, the country is emerging as center stage for potential conflicts of interest.

India slams developed countries for climate crisis at ICJ hearing
ICJ) on Thursday, saying they exploited the global carbon budget, failed to honour climate-finance promises and are now demanding that developing countries restrict their resource use. The court is examining what legal obligations countries have to address climate change and the consequences if they fail. India also urged the ICJ to avoid creating new obligations that go beyond the existing climate-change framework. «The court may exercise due caution to avoid devising new or additional obligations beyond what is already agreed under the existing climate-change regime, which take into consideration historic emissions, climate justice and the principal principle of equity and CBDR-RC, as well as the equitable access to the global carbon budget,» the country said.

How China became the world's largest car exporter
President-elect Donald Trump has promised to impose new tariffs on China. Many countries, including the United States, already levy extra tariffs on China's electric vehicles. But with all of the advantages China wields in automaking, this pushback is unlikely to undercut China's dominance. China's home market for car sales is the world's largest — almost as big as the U.S. and European markets combined.
