Israel Needs a New Leader
I continue to think about the fault lines exposed by what has happened in Gaza, including the generational division on support for Israel. Political splits between old and young aren’t new. May 1968 in France was a split between college students and their elders and it was fierce and culture-changing.

Indian companies to raise staff salaries by 9.8% in 2024; highest in APAC region
The report cited tighter labour markets and rising inflation as some of the major concerns influencing salary increase budget changes in companies for next year. However, compared to 2022, more than half of companies have increased their salary budgets this year, while a quarter have raised their budgets above the projections they made in December 2022, the survey showed. Technology, media and gaming, financial services and retail sectors are expected to see the highest salary increase of 10% in 2024. Companies in the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector (10% vs 9.8%), retail (10% vs 9.9%) and captives (9.9% vs 9.8%) have projected marginally higher increases for 2024 as compared to the actual salary increase in 2023 due to the continued demand for talent. “Companies across industries are still closely monitoring their cost structures,” said Rajul Mathur, consulting leader, work and rewards, WTW India. The Salary Budget Planning Report was conducted in April and May 2023 with around 32,512 sets of responses from companies across 150 countries. The survey had 708 participants from India.

Biden Has a Spending Choice: Guns or Butter
The last American President who tried to finance a war along with a new Great Society was Lyndon Johnson. It ended in inflation and retreat in Vietnam. President Biden now wants Congress to help allies win two wars abroad, and deter a third over Taiwan, yet he wants to continue spending on everything as if nothing in the world has changed.

UN General Assembly to meet over Israel-Hamas war on Thursday
UN General Assembly will meet Thursday to discuss the conflict triggered by the attack by Hamas militants on Israel, the body's president announced in a letter to member states. The Security Council has so far failed to agree on a resolution concerning the war, but a number of states — including Jordan on behalf of an Arab group of nations, Russia, Syria, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Cambodia — formally requested General Assembly President Dennis Francis to schedule the meeting. Last week, the UN Security Council, regularly divided on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, rejected a Russian draft resolution calling for a «humanitarian pause.» Only five of the 15 member states had supported the text, which condemned all violence against civilians and all terrorist acts, but did not name Hamas, an unacceptable omission to the United States, the United Kingdom and France. Washington then vetoed a second resolution put forward by Brazil as the text did not mention Israel's right to defend itself. Twelve out of 15 Council members voted in favor of that resolution, which also condemned the «heinous terrorist attacks by Hamas,» while Russia and the United Kingdom abstained. The United States was the only vote against, but as one of the body's five permanent members its vote counts as a veto. The Security Council will meet to discuss the issue Tuesday ahead of the General Assembly's gathering Thursday at 10:00 am (1400 GMT).

Steel ministry nod must for imports not cleared by BIS
steel ministry's nod mandatory for imports which have not been cleared by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), a move aimed at a crackdown on substandard goods. The decision comes after the BIS issued a quality control order for a variety of steel products and importers were mandated by the Centre to seek prior quality approval of import consignments which were meant for sale locally. Domestic steel importers said this may reduce imports of steel products which had surged in recent months. India's iron and steel imports stood at 7.68 million tonnes (mt) between April and August, up 59.45% from 4.82 mt a year ago. Under the existing policy, BIS certification is issued to eligible overseas steel mills.
