A fissured land: Israel, Palestine and Hamas
What is the genesis of this crisis? It’s an incendiary mix of politics, religion and economics. Modern Palestine was populated with Jews from the global diaspora—a British imperial drive—in 1948. Around 750,000 Palestinians were expelled as Jews captured 78% of the land.

Israel PM announces wartime 'emergency government' with Gantz
Benjamin Netanyahu announced Wednesday an «emergency government» with an opposition party leader, Benny Gantz, for the duration of the war with Gaza militants. «Following a meeting… held today, the two agreed on establishing an emergency government and war cabinet,» said a joint statement by the premier and Gantz, a former defence minister and army chief. The three-member «war cabinet» would include Netanyahu, Gantz and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant. Gadi Eisenkot, also a former army chief from Gantz's party, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer will serve as observers, according to the statement. Opposition leader Yair Lapid has not joined his former ally Gantz, but the statement said a seat would be «reserved» for him in the war cabinet. Netanyahu's extreme-right and ultra-Orthodox Jewish allies would remain in government. The premier has agreed to freeze the hardline government's divisive judicial overhaul, which had triggered mass street protests — the biggest in the country's history. «During the war, no bills or government-sponsored motions that are unrelated to the war would be advanced,» the statement said. Gantz last served in a Netanyahu administration in 2020-2021 under a rotation agreement that was meant to see him take the helm for the second half of the government's tenure, but early elections had been called before he was to become prime minister.

US President Joe Biden pledges military support for Israel amid Hamas attack, raising questions about aid for Ukraine
Gaza Strip. His promise raised questions about whether Washington can ramp up defense aid to Israel without jeopardizing aid for Ukraine, especially given Republican lawmakers' ouster of House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy and failure so far to name a replacement. Biden administration officials insist Washington can absolutely do both, but acknowledge there will be challenges.

Israel recaptures Gaza border areas on day four; death toll passes 3,000
Gaza border areas from Hamas militants as the war's death toll passed 3,000 on Tuesday, the fourth day of fierce fighting since the Islamists launched a surprise attack. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Israel's military campaign following Saturday's onslaught was only the start of a sustained war to destroy Hamas and «change the Middle East». Fears of a regional conflagration have surged amid expectations of a looming Israeli ground incursion into Gaza, the crowded enclave from where Hamas launched its land, air and sea attack on the Jewish Sabbath. The death toll in Israel has surged above 900 from the worst attack in the country's 75-year history, while Gaza officials have reported 765 people killed so far. Hamas gunmen killed more than 100 people in the kibbutz of Beeri alone, said Moti Bukjin, a volunteer with the charity Zaka that recovers bodies in accordance with Jewish law.

Hamas threatens to kill captives if Israel strikes civilians
Hamas movement threatened to execute an Israeli captive every time Israel bombs a Palestinian home without warning, as Israel called up an unprecedented 300,000 reservists and imposed a blockade on the Gaza Strip, raising fears it planned a ground assault. The violence, which has claimed more than 1,500 lives, prompted international declarations of support for Israel after a devastating weekend attack by Hamas, and appeals for an end to the fighting and protection of civilians. Israeli TV channels said the death toll from the Hamas attack had climbed to 900 Israelis, with at least 2,600 injured, and dozens taken captive. Among the Israeli dead were 260 mostly young people gunned down at a desert music festival, where some of the hostages were abducted. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed revenge in a fiery speech accusing Hamas of executing tied-up children and other atrocities.

Oil surged more than 5% while US equity futures dropped in Asia trading, as the risk of the conflict escalating across the Middle East region remains acute. “The Israel-Hamas conflicts over the weekend may escalate geopolitical tensions in the Middle East region, causing risk-off trades,” Tina Teng, an analyst at CMC Markets wrote in a note. “Markets will be concerned about the rippling effects to the region.” The MSCI Asia Pacific Index treaded water as markets in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan were closed for a holiday, while trading in Hong Kong was halted due to a typhoon.
