Beijing’s espionage campaign against the West
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. When a state-sponsored Chinese hacker breached the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, it allowed the Communist Party to access sensitive information with significant strategic implications. It’s the latest example of Beijing’s espionage campaign against the West, which runs deeper and is far more dangerous than the Soviet efforts of the 20th century.

Donald Trump's FBI director pick, Kash Patel, to face skeptical Democrats at Senate confirmation hearing
Kash Patel, President Donald Trump's pick to lead the FBI, will encounter deeply skeptical questioning from Democratic senators Thursday about his loyalty to the president and stated desire to overhaul the bureau as he faces a high-stakes hearing that will help determine his path toward confirmation. Patel, a Trump loyalist who has railed against the FBI over its investigations into the president and claimed that Jan 6 rioters were mistreated by the Justice Department, was picked in November to replace Christopher Wray, who led the nation's premier federal law enforcement agency for more than seven years.

FBI pick Kash Patel claims first casualty from his hit list
Donald Trump's pick to head the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), has claimed the first casualty from his hit list of 60 people who he thinks are the main actors of the deep state. FBI Director Christopher Wray will resign at the end of the Biden administration, the agency said on Wednesday. Wray was appointed by Trump in 2017 during his first term after Trump fired then director James Comey. After Trump's re-election, he announced several appointments among whom was Kash Patel as the next FBI Director. Since Wray had a 10-year term ending in 2027, Trump's announcement of Patel as FBI head left Wray with two options: leave on his own or be fired when Trump takes charge. Trump and his allies turned on Wray and the FBI after agents conducted a court-approved search of Trump’s Florida resort in 2022 to recover classified documents that he had retained after leaving office. Trump had called it weaponization of the agency which he said was part of a deep state conspiracy aimed at undermining his presidency.

Trump signals an aggressive opening, threatening 'jail' for Cheney and others
Donald Trump outlined an aggressive plan for opening his second term in an interview that aired Sunday, vowing to move immediately to crack down on immigration and pardon his most violent supporters while threatening to lock up political foes such as Liz Cheney. In his first sit-down broadcast network interview since being reelected, Trump said that on Day 1 of his new administration next month, he would extend clemency to the hundreds of his backers who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and try to bar automatic citizenship for children born in the United States to immigrant parents. Without giving a time frame, Trump also indicated that he would fire FBI Director Christopher Wray, out of personal pique because «he invaded my home» and was insufficiently certain at first whether Trump's wound during an assassination attempt this year was caused by a bullet or shrapnel. And he said that members of Congress who investigated his role in the Jan. 6 attack should be thrown behind bars.

Trump picked Patel for FBI after some aides warned it could backfire
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Some of President-elect Donald Trump’s top advisers in recent weeks warned him it would be problematic to nominate Kash Patel, one of his most loyal foot soldiers, to lead the FBI, even as it became increasingly clear Trump was leaning in that direction. They cautioned that Patel not only lacked the right experience, but they feared his embrace of controversial theories could hurt his chances at Senate confirmation, people familiar with the discussions said.

Trump pick Kash Patel must prove he'll restore public faith in the FBI, a leading GOP senator says
Donald Trump's drive to upend the FBI was welcomed by Republican senators although it was not clear on Sunday how strongly members of the incoming majority party would embrace his move to install ally Kash Patel as the next director of the Justice Department's top investigative arm. Patel, a onetime national security prosecutor who is aligned with the president-elect's rhetoric about a «deep state,» «must prove to Congress he will reform & restore public trust in FBI,» said Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, in line to be the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman when Republicans take control in January, in a post on X. Patel lacks the high-level legal and management experience that FBI directors, including Robert Mueller, James Comey and Christopher Wray, who now holds that job, had before their nominations. It's a 10-year term, and Trump named Wray in 2017 after firing Comey. So Trump's announcement late Saturday means Wray must either resign or be fired after Trump takes office on Jan. 20, 2025.

Trump’s team sets sights on new FBI leadership
Subscribe to enjoy similar stories. Donald Trump’s transition team is ramping up plans to replace FBI Director Christopher Wray before the end of his 10-year-term, the start of what the president-elect hopes will be a major shake-up of the agency that has been his perennial punching bag. Vice President-elect JD Vance on Tuesday tucked an announcement of the search at the end of a social-media post that began with him referring to someone as a “mouth breathing imbecile." Vance said he had recently met with Trump to interview people to be the bureau’s director, in the search for a candidate who would “dismantle the deep state." He later deleted the post.
