Volvo Veteran Hakan Samuelsson back as CEO for 2-year term
Volvo Car AB said Hakan Samuelsson, who served as its chief executive officer from 2012 to 2022, will retake the helm as the Swedish carmaker tries to navigate its way out of a malaise worsened by looming US tariffs. Samuelsson will replace Jim Rowan on April 1, and serve for a two-year term as the board looks for a long-term successor, the company said in a statement on Sunday. «With fast-moving technological shifts, growing geopolitical complexity, and intensifying competition across regions, the board believes the company is best served by leadership with deep industrial experience, deep knowledge of our group, and a proven ability to execute in challenging environments,» Volvo Car said. Volvo Car is among the European carmakers vulnerable to new 25% tariffs set to be imposed by the US next week on all imported passenger vehicles and light trucks, as well as key auto parts.

Ford Motor delays launch of new EV to let market further develop
Ford Motor said it is delaying the launch of a new three-row electric vehicle, which will buy time for the consumer market for EVs to further develop. The carmaker now expects to launch the new EV in 2027, delayed from a previous target date of 2025. Ford said it will still produce the EV at its Oakville Assembly Plant in Canada, which Ford is planning to overhaul from gas-vehicle production to an EV manufacturing plant.

Toyota's hybrid-first strategy is delivering big profits
Toyota Motor. Not long ago, it looked as if Toyota had fallen dangerously behind in electric vehicles. Tesla, the electric car pioneer, has grown rapidly and become the world's most valuable automaker. Seeing Tesla's success, other companies, such as General Motors and Ford Motor, concluded that large numbers of consumers were poised to switch to battery-powered cars and trucks and began investing tens of billions of dollars to catch up. Toyota, however, was more deliberate — or lethargic, its critics would say. It has introduced just two fully electric models in the United States so far, betting that its gas-electric hybrids and plug-in hybrid vehicles, which it has become known for, would remain popular and were sufficient to address climate change for now.

The Boom in Battery Metals for EVs Is Turning to Bust
When the world’s most valuable lithium company last year announced plans for a $1.3 billion plant in South Carolina, local officials hailed it as transformative for the Palmetto State. The high-tech project from Charlotte, N.C.-based Albemarle was designed to process different sources of lithium, including from recycled batteries, and serve as a supplier of the critical mineral for South Carolina’s burgeoning electric-vehicle industry. Less than a year later, those plans have been hobbled by a crash in battery metal prices, undercut by a slowdown in electric-vehicle sales growth in the U.S.

Big Automakers Plan Thousands of EV Chargers in $1 Billion U.S. Push
A group of major automakers is planning a joint investment to build thousands of electric-vehicle chargers in the U.S., people familiar with the plan said, a bid to ease a shortage of charging spots that deters many consumers from choosing EVs. The companies—BMW, General Motors, Honda Motor, Hyundai Motor, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Jeep maker Stellantis—plan to collectively invest at least $1 billion in a joint-venture company that will build out charging stations, the people said. The group is targeting the addition of around 30,000 fast chargers in urban and highway areas over several years.
