Yellowknife nearly emptied as fire fight continues: ‘Most of the people are now gone’
Northwest Territories, where officials say the weather has helped slow the threat of an encroaching wildfire. An evacuation order issued Wednesday for Yellowknife, a city of 20,000, had a deadline of Friday noon, and RCMP were going door to door urging people to leave.Officials say more than 19,000 people complied with the evacuation, leaving in streams of vehicles south down the highway or by air on evacuation flights. They say about 2,600 people remain in the city — 1,000 of them essential workers. As of Friday night, wind continued to pose an imminent threat and the fire remained about 15 kilometres from the northwest edge of the city.Prime Minister Justin Trudeau visited some evacuees in Edmonton and commended all for a “thoughtful, orderly evacuation.”Many evacuees have travelled to different areas of Alberta but some were also being flown to Manitoba.Emergency teams, crews working on the fire, utilities workers and the RCMP were among those remaining in the city.“Yellowknife feels like a ghost town at the moment, that’s for sure,” said Vincent Meslage, an essential worker.Meslage and a friend spent the better part of Friday driving people to the airport to get on evacuation flights.“There were some people that were still stressed out, other people remained calm,” he said.“At the end of the day, most of the people are now gone.”Meslage said the last gas station has closed in Yellowknife. So have all the stores and restaurants.Smoke lifted briefly in Yellowknife but returned Friday evening.Mike Westwick, a wildfire information officer, said cooler temperatures and more moisture in the air aided the fight and the fire didn’t move much.Unfortunately, no rain showed up.

British Columbia wildfires intensify, doubling evacuations to over 35,000
Canada's western province of British Columbia intensified further on Saturday, doubling the number of people under an evacuation order to 35,000 from a day earlier, as authorities warned of difficult days ahead. The province declared a state of emergency on Friday, to access temporary authoritative powers to tackle fire-related risks, as out-of-control fires ripped through interior British Columbia and partially shut down some sections of a key transit route between the Pacific coast and the rest of western Canada, and destroyed many properties. «The current situation is grim,» Premier Daniel Eby told reporters on Saturday, saying some 35,000 people are under an evacuation order, and a further 30,000 were under evacuation alert.

Canada: Massive wildfire threatens capital of Northwest Territories, thousands forced to evacuate
A massive wildfire in northern Canada is approaching the capital of the Northwest Territories and could reach Yellowknife's outskirts by the weekend if rains doesn't come. This year, Canada is facing its worst wildfire season ever, with over 1,000 active fires, including 230 in the Northwest Territories. Thousands have evacuated from remote communities, and the hamlet of Enterprise near Alberta was almost entirely destroyed by a recent blaze, a Reuter report cited Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane urged people to remain calm and cautioned that highways could close suddenly because of the fire risk.

Joe Oliver: Liberal party culture is past its best-by date
Philip Cross and I recently wrote articles on the same FP Comment page discussing Liberal culture’s negative influence on Canada’s economic growth. His focus was on entrepreneurship and innovation while mine treated climate-change catastrophism. We both described how culture can undermine fact-based analysis, rational decision-making and the economic well-being of ordinary Canadians.

Deal
Splitting in office, big deal? No big deal
political leaders marry in office is when they split in office. After 18 years of being Mister and Missus, and the former having been seven-and-a-half years into Canadian prime ministership, Justin and Sophie Trudeau announced on Wednesday that they will be going their separate ways. On paper, nothing remotely odd about that.
