King's Speech lays out more powers for the Office for Budget Responsibility
Speaking at the State Opening of Parliament, King Charles III set out new legal powers for the OBR, one of 15 measures targeting 'economic stability and growth'. The move to further the OBR's responsibilities came on the back of Prime Minister Keir Starmer's ambition to restore the powers of the UK's fiscal watchdog, which were severely dented by former Conservative prime minister Liz Truss when she went ahead with her Mini Budget plans without consulting the OBR. Paul Diggle, chief economist at abrdn, said the reforms «will not make a practical difference to how the Labour governme...

UK polls point to 'electoral extinction' for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservatives
opinion polls released late on Saturday presented a grim picture for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's Conservative Party, and one pollster warned that the party faced "electoral extinction" in July 4's election. The polls come just over halfway through the election campaign, after a week in which both the Conservatives and Labour set out their manifestos, and shortly before voters begin to receive postal ballots.

Rishi Sunak’s visa politics has implications for Indian students
Does the political survival of Britain’s first Indian-origin prime minister call for the sacrifice of the dreams of thousands of Indian students aspiring to study in the UK and find a job there to pay off the loans they have taken to finance their education? We hope Rishi Sunak will rise above the primitive instinct to make sacrifices and instead turn fortune's grimace into a smile. Right now, Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party is on a losing wicket in British politics. It has lost all recent by-elections and city council elections.

Who is Suella Braverman? Know in detail about UK Home Secretary sacked by Rishi Sunak
Rishi Sunak has sacked Home Secretary Suella Braverman after she came under attack for writing an article in the 'Times'. In the article, the Indian-origin MP criticized what she called «pro-Palestinian mobs» and wrote that protest scenes were «disturbingly reminiscent» of those seen in Northern Ireland. Braverman also criticized the Met Police for a «double standard» over their handling of protests. Quitting her office, the Tory MP said it was «the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary». James Cleverly has replaced her.

UK PM Rishi Sunak's strategy: Paint Keir Starmer as 'Captain Hindsight' to forge ahead in 2024 polls
rise of AI, the people said. To that end, Sunak and his top political aides have been focused on crafting bolder policy proposals to roll out in the coming weeks, designed to present a forward-looking vision for voters. The hope is that the strategy will reinforce a common criticism of Starmer, that he’s cautious and uninspiring, and chip away at Labour’s roughly 20-point lead in the polls.

UK 'clear-eyed' about disagreements with China, Cleverly says
James Cleverly said on Wednesday London wanted to have a pragmatic relationship with Beijing but warned it would remain «clear-eyed» about the areas where the two countries disagreed. Cleverly was making a long-awaited trip to China on Wednesday in an effort to reset ties between the two countries after years of tension over security, investment and human rights concerns. The foreign secretary has argued that it would be a mistake to try to isolate the world's second-largest economy or tackle climate change without its input. «We are clear-eyed about the areas where we have fundamental disagreements with China and we raise those issues when we meet,» he told broadcasters. «But I think it's important to also recognise that we have to have a pragmatic, sensible working relationship with China because of the issues that affect us all around the globe.» The British government is under pressure from some lawmakers, including the former Prime Minister Liz Truss, who want London to toughen its policy on China and to declare the country a threat to British national security. Cleverly said attempts to distill the relationship down to a single word or a soundbite were fundamentally flawed. «It is an important country, it's a large country, an influential country, and a complicated country, and therefore our relationship with China will necessarily be just as complicated and sophisticated,» he said.
