Lok Sabha is set to turn stormy with INDIA bloc deciding to move adjournment motions on Friday to discuss NEET paper leak. The Opposition will move the motions under Rule 267. The decision was taken at a meeting of floor leaders of INDIA bloc parties held at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday. The Opposition parties unanimously decided to raise NEET, Agniveer, unemployment and other issues in Parliament. According to sources, a uniform strategy will be employed in both Houses. Both Houses are scheduled to debate the motion of thanks to the President's address on Friday. While Rajya Sabha's business advisory committee has allotted 26 hours for this discussion, the Lok Sabha is likely to allot a similar time. The business advisory committee of the Lok Sabha has not been formed yet.

NEET and UGC-NET paper leak, President Droupadi Murmu emphasised that her government is committed to an impartial probe and will ensure that those involved in the crime are given the severest sentence. In her first address to the joint sitting of Parliament after the constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha, President Murmu also brought up the 1975 national emergency, terming it an attack on the Constitution and a «dark chapter». Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday congratulated Om Birla on being elected the Lok Sabha speaker and said he hoped that actions like suspension of MPs would not be taken as they hurt the dignity of the House. BJP ally Chirag Paswan on Tuesday took a swipe at the Congress for playing the "Dalit card" in the election for Lok Sabha speaker, claiming that the opposition resorts to the ploy whenever its defeat in a contest is certain. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) leader said in a post in Hindi on X that when the Congress-led opposition knew that it would lose the vice-presidential poll in 2002, it fielded Dalit leader Sushil Kumar Shinde. It named another Congress leader Meira Kumar, who hails from a Dalit community, as its choice for president in 2017 when the numbers favoured the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Ram Nath Kovind, who was elected, Paswan said.

INDIA bloc on Tuesday fielded Congress leader K Suresh as its candidate for the Speaker's position against Om Birla. Congress leader K C Venugopal and DMK's T R Baalu walked out of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh's office, refusing to endorse NDA candidate Birla without being offered the Deputy Speaker's position. Three sets of nominations were filed in support of Suresh, a Dalit leader and eight-term MP. Suresh, born on June 4, 1962, in Kodikunnil, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, is a notable figure in Indian politics. Affiliated with the Indian National Congress, he has served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for seven consecutive terms.

The Congress had alleged that the government has violated procedures and conventions and ignored the right of eight-term member Suresh to the post of the pro-tem Speaker, a claim dismissed as «misleading» by Rijiju.

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Friday criticised the Centre for appointing a pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha in alleged violation of parliamentary conventions and thus not giving the role to the most senior MP in the Lok Sabha Congress's Kodikunnil Suresh. Terming the Centre's decision as objectionable, Vijayan said the union government needs to clarify why Suresh, who is most senior MP in the Lok Sabha, was not chosen for the position, as per convention. The CM, in a statement issued by his office, also questioned what is the BJP's answer to those who suspect that Suresh was not considered for the post due to the «upper caste politics» followed by the Sangh Parivar. Vijayan's remarks came a day after seven-term parliamentarian and BJP leader Bhartruhari Mahtab was made the pro-tem Speaker of the Lok Sabha.
