Worli assembly constituency as Rajya Sabha member Milind Deora belonging to the ruling Shiv Sena on Tuesday filed his nomination and will take on sitting MLA Aaditya Thackeray of the Shiv Sena (UBT). Deora, a former Congress leader and Union minister of state, joined the Sena before the Lok Sabha polls this year and was subsequently elected to the Rajya Sabha.

Mithun Chakraborty on Sunday asserted that the «masnad» (throne) of West Bengal will be of BJP after the 2026 assembly elections in the state, promising to do whatever it takes to achieve the goal. National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak-Muivah (NSCN-IM) is likely to take place in the first week of October in New Delhi. An NSCN-IM leader said, “We are asked to come to New Delhi to resume talks which have stalled for quite some time.The ball is currently in the court of the Centre. TMC leader Derek O'Brien on Sunday alleged parliamentary standing committees had not been formed despite the 18th Lok Sabha completing 100 days since its constitution and said Parliament was being turned into a «deep, dark chamber». In a post on X, the Trinamool Congress' (TMC) leader in the Rajya Sabha said seven out of 10 Bills were sent to department-related standing committees of Parliament in the 15th Lok Sabha while only two out of 10 Bills were sent to the panels in the last Lok Sabha. «Parliamentary standing committees have not yet been formed. In the 15th Lok Sabha, seven out of 10 Bills were sent to committees for scrutiny. In the last Lok Sabha, only two out of 10 Bills got scrutinised ,» O'Brien said. «Parliament is being turned into a deep, dark chamber,» he added.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over his remarks on «ending reservation», Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday said such comments by a person holding a constitutional post shows «anti-constitutional mindset». Addressing a public event in Mumbai, Dhankhar also said that awareness about India's Constitution is highly needed as some people have forgotten its soul. «A person from a constitutional post saying on a foreign land that reservation should be ended underscores the same anti-constitutional mindset. The baton of prejudices against reservation has been handed over. It is the same old anti-constitutional mindset,» he said. «Reservation is not against meritocracy, but it is the soul of the country and the Constitution. It is an affirmative action and not negative. It is not depriving someone of opportunity but handholding those who are pillars of strength of the society,» the vice president said.

Rahul Gandhi on Thursday shared a video on martial arts sessions held at campsites of his east to west Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra earlier this year and said a "Bharat Dojo Yatra" is coming soon. Dojo broadly refers to a training hall or school for martial arts. «During the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, as we journeyed across thousands of kilometers, we had a daily routine of practicing jiu-jitsu every evening at our campsite. A survey conducted by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) puts a number to the alarming extent of stress and fear among doctors. According to the survey, 82.7% of doctors experience significant stress in their profession, 62.8% fear violence and 46.3% identify violence as a major source of their stress. The panel will submit its report on the last day of the first week of the next session of Parliament, said minorities affairs minister Kiren Rijiju. As he moved a motion to adopt the names of 21 members, Congress member Kodukkunil Suresh said the Indian Union Muslim League, his party's Kerala ally, should be included in the panel.

S Jaishankar on Friday said the government is awaiting the release of 69 Indians recruited into the Russian army and that in many cases there are indications that the Indian nationals were misled. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, the minister also said the government has taken up seriously the issues of recruitment of Indian nationals into the Russian army and cyber crime trafficking of nationals to South East Asian countries. There are a total of 91 cases so far of Indian nationals being recruited in the Russian army. Out of them, eight have passed away, 14 have been discharged or sent back, and the release of 69 nationals is awaited, Jaishankar said during the Question Hour. «We take this issue very very seriously… I have myself raised it many times with the Russian foreign minister,» he said and added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took up the issue during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month.

Lok Sabha on Thursday while Opposition parties have demanded that it should be sent to a Parliamentary panel for further scrutiny. In the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Lok Sabha, chaired by Speaker Om Birla, the government informed that the bill is likely to be introduced on Thursday. In the meeting, leaders from the Congress, NCP-SCP, Samajwadi Party and Trinamool Congress strongly opposed the bill introduction and said it should be referred to a Parliamentary committee.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday while replying to the discussion on the Finance Bill in Lok Sabha said, «Without drastically increasing taxes, we have brought in a simplified taxation regime, eased compliance.» Effective tax on annual income of Rs 15 lakh was reduced to 10 per cent in 2023 and further reduced this year as well under new I-T regime, said FM. «The vision of PM Modi has been to establish a simple, efficient and fair technology-driven taxation regime in this country. So, simplification and ease of compliance for the taxpayer has been the primary objective with which in the last 10 years, and this year, in the third term of PM Modi, the approach to taxation has been to simplify it, reduce the burden on taxpayer and make sure it is transparent and Equitas,» said Sitharaman.

Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, 1958, which gives sweeping powers to the armed forces operating in disturbed areas to search, arrest and open fire if they deem it necessary, has been removed from most parts of the northeast, except a few districts and some police station areas, Parliament was informed on Tuesday. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said there has been a considerable reduction in the number of «disturbed areas» under the AFSPA and the law has been withdrawn completely from Tripura (from May 27, 2015) and Meghalaya (April 1, 2018). The AFSPA has also been withdrawn from all districts except four in Assam, he said. Rai said the AFSPA has been withdrawn gradually in Arunachal Pradesh and it is currently applicable only in three police station areas in Namsai district and three other districts — Tirap, Changlang and Longding.
