Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, on Thursday termed the allegations levelled against him by Anurag Thakur in the Lok Sabha baseless, saying the remarks damaged his reputation as he dared the BJP MP to prove them or else resign. Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, the Congress president said the BJP MP was compelled to withdraw his defamatory remarks made during the debate on the Waqf Bill in the Lower House. «But the damage has been done,» Kharge said. He also sought an apology from Thakur as well as the Leader of the House in Rajya Sabha, J P Nadda, over the issue. «Yesterday, Anurag Thakur hurled completely false and baseless charges at me in the Lok Sabha. When my colleagues challenged him, he was compelled to withdraw his defamatory remarks. But the damage has been done,» Kharge said.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has decided to propose that state governments be allowed to decide on non-Muslim members in State Waqf Boards as the controversial Waqf (Amendment) Bill comes for introduction and passage in Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The party has decided to take a nuanced stand on the floor of the House after detailed meetings at Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s residence late on Tuesday night. According to sources, Naidu consulted legal experts and decided that the party will support the bill but the Lok Sabha MPs will propose the change in their speeches.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Jitin Prasada said that as on date, reciprocal tariffs have not been applied by the US on India. He said that the government continues to engage with the US to achieve enhancement and broadening of bilateral trade ties in a mutually beneficial and fair manner. “Both countries plan to negotiate a mutually beneficial, multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement. Both countries would focus on increasing market access, reducing tariff and non-tariff barriers, enhancing supply chain integration and resolving bilateral trade issues,” Prasada said. In a separate reply, he said recently, the government has not taken any such steps to lift ban on import of certain prohibited and restricted products from USA, China and UK.

Chapter 25 of the 'Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha' has enabling provisions to hold secret sittings at the request of the Leader of the House. According to Rule 248, subclause one, on a request made by the Leader of the House, the speaker will fix a day or a part of it for sitting of the House in secret. Subclause 2 says that when the House sits in secret no stranger will be permitted to be present in the chamber, lobby or the galleries. But there are some who will be allowed during such sittings. Another rule in the chapter says the speaker may direct that a report of the proceedings of a secret sitting be issued in such manner as the chair thinks fit.

Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday said the Centre has failed to bring peace at gunpoint in Manipur and urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the state and listen to the apprehensions and concerns of the people. BJP members, including Nishikant Dubey, objected to Gogoi's extensive reference to the situation in Manipur and cited rules to point out that the Congress leader should stick to the demands for grants and the state budget.

Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said there was a need to filter out leaders and workers from his party who were working for the BJP and warned of strict action, even removals. The local body elections are meant to empower party workers and strengthen the organisation at the grassroots level.» «I or my party have never said that the INDIA bloc or the MVA should be dissolved,» the Rajya Sabha member added.
