Budget Session: Over 100% productivity in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha; 6 Bills passed amid debates, protests
Motion of Thanks to the President's Address, Union budget and the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025. A total of 16 Bills were passed in this session. Though the Opposition registered its protests over issues, it refrained from forcing adjournments and chose to stage walkouts or attack the government through debates on most occasions.
Rajya Sabha ex-officio Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar informed the House in his concluding address on Friday that productivity of the session was 119% (PRS Legislative Research data puts it at 112%).
The Motion of Thanks to the President's Address was discussed for three working days with active participation of 73 members. The House also spent three days to discuss the 2025-26 budget with 89 members taking part. Though the waqf bill was discussed and passed on the same day, the Rajya Sabha spent 11 hours discussing it and passed it at 2:34 am on Friday.
Discussion on the working of four key ministries — Education, Railways, Health and Family Welfare, and Home Affairs — also took place in the Rajya Sabha.
The Opposition cornered the government on the New Education Policy, rise in accidents in railways, the Ayushman Bharat scheme and the situation in Manipur.
The Lok Sabha also had a productive budget session, clocking 118% (PRS data says it was 111%), according to the secretariat of the Lower House. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said a total of 26 sittings, lasting 160 hours and 48 minutes, were held in the session that concluded on Friday. Lok Sabha spent 17.23 hours to discuss the Motion of Thanks to the President's Address with 173 members taking part.
