Hurriyat Conference on Monday said it has always believed in the dialogue process and had conveyed the same to Lok Sabha member Asaduddin Owaisi in 2016, when Hurriyat leaders were in detention in Srinagar.

In response to defence minister Rajnath Singh's assertion during an election rally in Jammu that the Hurriyat had shut doors of dialogue in 2016, the separatist organisation said it wanted to set the record straight as it was the first time that it had come to know that the initiative in 2016 was the BJP-led central government's initiative.
«AIMIM head Asaduddin Owaisi, a member of the visiting Opposition delegation in 2016, came to see him in the sub-jail. During the meeting Owaisi told Mirwaiz that a delegation of MPs wants to meet the Hurriyat leadership regarding the grim situation,» the Hurriyat said.
It said Mirwaiz expressed anguish and requested Owaisi to ask the government to stop killings and allow the Hurriyat leadership lodged in different jails and under house arrest to meet with each other and discuss the situation. «We would discuss among ourselves first before the leadership decides if they can collectively talk to the delegation and figure out if the Opposition MPs can help in some serious attempt at long term engagement or if it is just another attempt at crisis management which will be dumped once the crisis is over as past experiences have shown,» said the Hurriyat statement.
