Opposition meeting in Bengaluru, several prominent parties such as Congress, Trinamool Congress (TMC), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Samajwadi Party, DMK, etc will sit together to form a strategy to defeat the BJP in the next year's general election. Around 24 top leaders of political parties will be attending the meeting.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi e-filed an appeal in the Supreme Court on Saturday challenging a Gujarat High Court order that refused to stay a Surat trial court’s sentencing order, reported TOI. The appeal said, “If the relief is not granted to the petitioner, then he will lose eight years of his career.” Under Section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, a person convicted and sentenced to two years for any offence would remain disqualified to contest elections for the jail term and six years after serving the sentence. Rahul Gandhi said the offence registered against him at the behest of one Purnesh Modi, whose lawyer P S Sudheer has filed a caveat in the SC to ensure that Rahul does not get any ex-parte stay on the HC decision, was neither serious in nature nor fell in the category of “moral turpitude” to warrant such severe sentence. Gandhi was disqualified as a Member of Parliament on March 24, 2023 after a Gujarat court convicted him and sentenced him to a two-year imprisonment on charges of criminal defamation for comments he made about the Modi surname.

Mamata Banerjee will not be attending an opposition dinner on July 17 as she has to follow post-surgery protocols, but will be part of the daylong meeting of the parties on July 18, sources in her Trinamool Congress (TMC) said on Saturday. Banerjee underwent a microsurgery on her left knee at the state-run SSKM hospital in Kolkata on Thursday. The TMC chief suffered a ligament injury on her left knee during the emergency landing of her helicopter at the Sevoke Airbase in north Bengal on June 27.

Kerala High Court has stayed trial proceedings in a case against staffers of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's office in Wayanad for allegedly causing damage to a photograph of Mahatma Gandhi kept inside the office. Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan issued an interim order staying the proceedings at a local court against four staff members of Rahul Gandhi in the case which was registered last year.

Congress leader Sachin Pilot on Wednesday targeted the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, saying there is a «conspiracy» to put pressure on people who advocate democracy and expose those in power. Modi, the complainant who filed a defamation case against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Gujarat, has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court in the matter pertaining to the Gujarat High Court decision denying to stay Rahul Gandhi's conviction in the defamation case against 'Modi surname' remark. Purnesh Ishwerbhai Modi also wants to be heard in the case when the apex court takes up Gandhi's appeal against the Gujarat High Court's decision declining to stay his conviction in a defamation case.

Gandhi was disqualified following his conviction by a lower court in the 2019 'Modi surname' defamation case. Gandhi had moved Gujarat High Court seeking a stay on his conviction, however, on Friday, the plea was dismissed by the court.
