India has recorded trade surplus with as many as 151 countries such as the US and Netherlands, while the country has a trade deficit with 75 nations including China and Russia during the first half of this year, according to think tank GTRI. The Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI) said that India does not need to worry about the trade deficit from importing crude oil and coal, however, it must focus on reducing the industrial goods imports, especially from countries like China, as these threaten India's economic sovereignty. «Between January and June 2024, India had a trade surplus with 151 countries, representing 55.8 per cent of its exports and 16.5 per cent of its imports, totalling USD 72.1 billion,» GTRI said in a report. The biggest surpluses were with the USA (USD 21 billion) and the Netherlands (USD 11.6 billion) during January-June this year.

Benchmark indices Nifty and Sensex maintained their momentum, closing at record highs on Friday. This marked Nifty's best week in two months, extending its winning streak to 12 consecutive sessions. NBCC (India) Ltd on Saturday said the board has approved issue of bonus shares in a ratio of 1:2 to eligible shareholders and the company will utilise Rs 90 crore free reserve for this purpose. In a regulatory filing, the company informed that the board has approved issuance of bonus shares and fixation of record date. «The Board of Directors has recommended the issuance of bonus shares to the shareholders of the company in the ratio of 1:2 i.e. one new fully paid-up equity share of Rs 1 each for every two existing shares to the eligible members as on the record Date,» the company said.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Saturday said the ambit of the Majhi Ladki Bahin Scheme will be expanded to cover 2.5 crore women even as the state government has transferred money into the bank accounts of 1.7 crore beneficiaries so far. We belong to the family of farmers. Having experienced poverty, we understood why a scheme like this was necessary. We know the value of Rs 1,500,» Shinde said. The Ladki Bahin Scheme provides monthly assistance of Rs 1,500 to married, divorced, and destitute women in the 21-60 age group with a Rs 2.5 lakh annual family income ceiling.

India's financial capital recorded 11,628 property registrations in the month of August, marking a 7% on-year increase in deals. marmoset monkeys, native to South America, use specific vocal calls, known as «phee-calls,» to identify and communicate with each other. The study, which adds to existing knowledge of animal communication, was conducted by a team from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and published in the journal Science. This finding follows earlier research that showed wild African elephants also use name-like calls to address individuals. David Omer, lead researcher from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, explained that the study recorded natural conversations between pairs of marmosets and interactions between monkeys and a computer system. The researchers found that marmosets specifically used «phee-calls» to address individual members of their group, and these calls were correctly perceived and responded to by the intended recipients. «They (the monkeys) also perceived and responded correctly to calls that were specifically directed at them,» the authors wrote.

Sebi proposes mandate for regulated entities to maintain stakeholder communication records “It has been observed that merchant bankers are engaged in private placement activities pertaining to unlisted companies, advisory services for projects and syndication of rupee term loans, which are outside the domain of SEBI," the paper said. Arguing that such activities pose significant regulatory and systemic risks, the regulator proposed an overhaul of its regulations governing merchant bankers. Sebi’s paper clarified that merchant bankers—excluding banks and public financial institutions—will undertake only those activities that are related to the securities market and fall under Sebi’s jurisdiction.
