Sheetal Devi suffered an exit, while Sarita Kumari put up dominating show to storm into the quarterfinals of the compound women's open category at the Paralympics here on Saturday. First, it was the ninth seed Sarita who put up a dominated from the start to down Italy's Eleonora Sarti 141-135 in a one-sided affair. Sheetal, who draws the arrow with her toes, endured a blip in the second end where she shot the 7-point red ring to go down to Tokyo silver medalist Mariana Zuniga of Chile 137-138 in the pre-quarters. Sarita will be up against Turkey's Onzur Cure Girdi who smashed the world record to top the qualifying round with a score of 704 out of a maximum 720 points.

Deepika Kumari crumbed under pressure once again, suffering a 4-6 loss to Korea's Suhyeon Nam in the women's individual event quarterfinals to bring down curtains on India's campaign at the Paris Olympics here on Saturday. Deepika had qualified for the quarterfinals after defeating Germany's Michelle Kroppen 6-4 earlier in the day. Deepika had defeated the 19-year-old Nam in straight sets in the semifinal at the Shanghai World Cup in April en route winning a silver medal, but on Saturday the Indian stalwart could not repeat that performance. The two archers were tied 4-4 after four sets but Nam was rewarded for her consistency as she claimed the fifth set to enter the semifinals.

Deepika Kumari on Saturday qualified for the quarterfinals of the women's individual archery event after defeating Germany's Michelle Kroppen in the 1/8 elimination round but Bhajan Kaur crashed out following the loss to Indonesia's Diananda Choirunisa 6-5. Deepika will be in action again later on Saturday. Deepika defeated her German rival 6-4 in the elimination round after recording a score of 27-24 in the first set to garner two points. The two then shot 27-27 in the second set to share the points. Deepika won the third set 26-25 for two more points. In the fourth set, the German took two points with a 29-27 win but Deepika was already ahead by two points heading into the final set.

If Manu Bhakur is able to win, the 22-year-old shooter can become the first Indian athlete to win three Olympic medals in an individual sport. Plus, she could become only the first from her nation to win three Olympic medals in a single edition of the games.
