Among the things that the New Year will bring are another couple of ticks on the clock for Jamie Dimon’s five year retention bonus, and consequently the opportunity for a few more rounds of speculation about succession. Surveying the top executives of JPM seems to suggest that nothing much has changed since the last round of speculation – Dan Pinto is the emergency candidate, Mariane Lake and Jennifer Piepszak are the top two most likely successors, but Jamie’s nowhere near the exit door yet and might not even leave at the end of the period.

When FMCG giants pushed on with a cartful of troubles
FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies have a lot going for them: rising disposable incomes, rapid pace of urbanisation, growing aspirations and lower penetration of branded products. However, despite a vast growth opportunity, the FMCG companies struggled with various challenges in 2023 and hope to have a better 2024. Weaker-than-expected festive demand, rainfall deficit that hampered rural growth, unseasonal rains that dampened sale of beverages and higher commodity prices constituted a daunting landscape for India's FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods) companies in 2023. When inflation was at a record high, the FMCG industry had a high price-led growth in the last five-six quarters, though the volume was under stress. However, the trend has started reversing with the cooling of commodity prices. While volume growth for the FMCG industry in urban India has been on a positive trajectory since April-June last year, rural markets have grown marginally this calendar year, according to market researcher NielsenIQ. In the September quarter, urban markets grew 10.2% year-on-year while rural grew 6.4%, it said. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, rural markets were driving overall growth, growing twice as fast as urban markets. But the demand has slowed down in the current quarter. Overall sales of apparel and electronic products have been languishing for over a year now, while those of mass-segment electronic products have been low since the pandemic outbreak. According to researcher GfK, there was a slight pick-up in mass segment during Diwali. Below are some of the challenges faced by the FMCG companies that attracted attention in 2023:

The Nifty 50 index closed 0.22% lower at 21,731 points, while the Sensex settled 0.23% down at 72,240 points — both only slightly shy of the record highs hit in the previous session. The Nifty has jumped over 20% in 2023 and the Sensex has risen nearly 19% to log their best years since 2021 and second-best since 2017, fuelled by sustained domestic mutual fund inflows, the return of foreign buying, better-than-expected macroeconomic growth and steady corporate earnings. Here's how analysts read the market pulse: «Immediate support is observed around 21600, followed by 21500, while strong support lies around the week's low around the 21300 mark. Although prices are in uncharted territory with no prominent resistance visible, 21850 followed by 22000 presents an immediate hurdle, considering the overbought conditions.

Virat Kohli returns to run-scoring ways in record-breaking 2023, but redemption incomplete sans ICC, IPL trophies
Virat Kohli returned to his normal, run-scoring ways with a historic, record-breaking and consistent 2023 as a batter, breaking some massive batting records previously considered untouchable. The star batter went several steps ahead to match the legacy of the Indian great Sachin Tendulkar. This year will be known as the one of Virat's redemption. Every match, every series, and every tournament saw him grab headlines and re-write record books, even during some occasional off days with the bat. Though Virat's redemption story remains incomplete without the presence of the highly-elusive Indian Premier League (IPL) title, ICC World Test Championship mace, and the most heartbreaking of them all, an ICC Cricket World Cup trophy at home, Virat's batting still gave millions of his fans immeasurable joy, ecstasy, pride, and many more reasons to consider him their 'GOAT' (Greatest of All Time).
