When the faithful scan the code and pay, instead of going to any genuine temple trust, the money goes to swindlers.
Not just messages, people are also getting phone calls asking for donations. If the receiver of the call expresses willingness to donate, they get sent an QR code.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has issued a warning regarding the matter, and flagged the issue to the Home Ministry and police chiefs in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
According to a top VHP functionary, Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra, the trust that is overseeing the construction work, «has not authorised anyone to collect funds».
While the organisation is sending out invites, it does not accept any donations, the official affirmed.
The matter came to light when a man got a call from a number and shared it with a VHP worker known to him.
The VHP worker called the number and the swindler's ploy was unearthed.
The VHP subsequently shared an audio clip of the recorded phone call on social media, some media channels have reported.
According to an NDTV report, a VHP worker posed as someone who wanted to donate. He called the number and said he wanted to donate Rs 11,000 and that others in the village also wanted to donate.
The person on the other side of the call asked for a WhatsApp number where he could send the QR code.
The alleged swindler further said that names and other details of the donors were being put on record so that they could be invited to the inauguration ceremony.
