Panama Canal to allow more ship traffic in January as rains ease drought
Panama Canal, which has been strained by drought for months, will increase the number of ships it accepts each day starting in January, thanks to better-than-expected November rains. As many as 24 vessels will be permitted to pass through the system daily, up from 22 currently, the canal authority said in a statement Friday. A powerful El Nino has reduced rainfall in the region, sapping the canal’s water levels.

Chart Check: Time to buy? ITC likely to surpass 500 levels and hit fresh record highs in 3 months
ITC Ltd, part of the S&P BSE Sensex index, has underperformed the benchmark index but is seen consolidating around the breakout area of the cup and handle pattern on the daily charts. The level of Rs 450 is acting as a crucial support for the ITC stock price and a bounce back could be possible around these levels as various technical parameters suggest that bulls are here to stay. The stock is down by about 0.5% in a week compared to over 2% gain seen in the S&P BSE Sensex in the same period. It rose more than 4% in a month compared to 9% gain seen in the benchmark index. Short term traders can look to buy the stock now or on dips for a possible target above 500 once Rs 499 is breached – which is the July record high. The stock hit a record high of Rs 499 on 24 July 2023 but it failed to hold on to the momentum.

Wall Street's China stock bulls keep hopes alive for 2024
Wall Street, 2023 is a year to forget. Global investment banks turned almost unanimously optimistic on the market around this time last year, only to be confounded by a 14% drop in the MSCI China Index. Now, as policymakers ramp up efforts to arrest a housing slump and extend funding support for the broader economy, hopes are building again that 2024 will be better. But it's a case of once bitten, twice shy. This time around, expectations are much more modest. «It's like we've stood still in time for 12 months.

Swiggy's 'collection fee' sparks dispute with restaurants
Swiggy's decision to charge 2% collection fee on all orders starting December 20 is an «unwelcome distraction», the country's leading restaurant body said on Sunday. The National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI), which represents over 500,000 companies across the country, also said restaurants will seek clarity from the food delivery platform in the coming days. «December is supposed to be the best month of business for us; for Swiggy to unilaterally come up with this suddenly in peak season is definitely an unwelcome distraction,» said Sagar Daryani, vice president of NRAI. Swiggy's move is «nothing but a way of indirectly increasing commission costs», alleged Daryani who is also founder and chief executive of Wow! Momo chain of restaurants. Swiggy did not respond to ET's email seeking comments till press time Sunday. The platform, in an email to restaurant partners, said it will charge a standardised 2% collection fee on all orders effective from December 20. «This fee is for facilitating seamless customer payments on the Swiggy platform.
