Tur, chana prices fall 4% on rising imports, government actions, fall in demand
imports of arhar/tur from Africa and masoor from Canada, and the government’s strict action on stock limits and aggressive selling of chana, along with reduced consumer demand amid high prices, have brought down prices of pulses by about 4% in one month. Wholesale price of tur/arhar dal, the most expensive dal in the market, has declined by 4% in the past one month due to the stock limit imposed by the central government on traders and processors, trade body Indian Pulses and Grains Association (IPGA) said in a report. Price of chana dal, which is currently the cheapest dal available in the market, has declined by 4% in one month while masoor price has softened by more than 2% due to rising imports and reduced demand.

New Zealand immigration hits an all-time high as movement surges following pandemic lull
New Zealand's immigration numbers have hit an all-time high, enabling employers to fill jobs but also putting pressure on the housing market, according to economists. The net number of immigrants was 110,000 in the year ending August, beating the previous high of 103,000 set a month earlier, according to figures released Wednesday by Statistics New Zealand. The numbers represent a big turnaround after more people left New Zealand than arrived during much of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We are talking very, very big numbers for a small economy like ours,” said Jarrod Kerr, chief economist at Kiwibank. Kerr said the surge likely reflected pent-up demand that had built during the pandemic. He said it had come as a relief to employers, who last year were having great difficulty finding skilled workers to fill vacant roles. New Zealand's unemployment rate remains at a relatively low 3.6 per cent.

Hamas' Mohammed Deif, Israel attack mastermind, reveals why he launched 9/11 like assault
Hamas last week, Mohammed Deif, the secretive mastermind behind the assault, has provided insights into the motives behind what Israel has likened to its '9/11 moment.' This revelation comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hamas, with the recent assault marking the most substantial breach in Israeli defenses since the 1973 Arab-Israeli conflict. Deif's audio message, broadcast as Hamas launched thousands of rockets from the Gaza strip on Saturday, underscores the message of retaliation for Israeli raids at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque. This mosque, a long-standing flashpoint for violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem, was stormed by Israeli forces in May 2021, sparking widespread anger in the Arab and Muslim world.

How a secretive Hamas commander masterminded the attack on Israel
Israel calls last week's devastating attack by Hamas its 9/11 moment. The secretive mastermind behind the assault, Palestinian militant Mohammed Deif, calls it Al Aqsa Flood. The phrase Israel's most wanted man used in an audio tape broadcast as Hamas fired thousands of rockets out of the Gaza strip on Saturday signalled the attack was payback for Israeli raids at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa mosque. It was in May 2021, after a raid on Islam's third holiest site that enraged the Arab and Muslim world, when Deif began planning the operation that has killed more than 1,200 people in Israel, according to a source close to Hamas in Gaza. «It was triggered by scenes and footage of Israel storming Al Aqsa mosque during Ramadan, beating worshippers, attacking them, dragging elderly and young men out of the mosque,» the source said.

CEA issues guidelines for hydro projects after disaster in Sikkim
NEW DELHI : India’s apex power planning body, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), has come up with guidelines for slope stability—inclines that can withstand movement—in hydropower projects after heavy rains and glacial lake floods damaged a dam in Sikkim. The guidelines said that in the case of projects that are “vulnerable", the project authority or developer would be responsible for examining the upper reaches, including the reservoir, identify fault sites and take remedial measures for stabilization.
