Plants don’t have ears. But they can still detect sound
Another, published last year, found that marigolds and sage plants exposed to the noise of traffic from a busy motorway suffered stunted growth, and produced a range of stress compounds. Other research, much of it done in China, reports that certain frequencies, played in acoustically controlled environments like greenhouses, can affect seed germination and even boost crop yields. And plants can make noises, too, albeit not deliberately.

G-20 aims to triple renewables and gives caveat to fossil fuels
renewable energy capacity by 2030 though also offered support to technology that can sustain the use of fossil fuels, easing concerns from Russia and Saudi Arabia that had previously stalled a deal. Members will make a commitment to “pursue and encourage” efforts to meet the target to increase clean energy generation, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The bloc will also call for a similar impetus in the deployment of abatement technologies like carbon capture that can reduce emissions from the use of gas, coal and oil, said some of the people, who asked not to be named as the details aren’t yet public. Even so, the outcome offers some new momentum in the energy transition after global concerns over supply security and costs had begun to erode progress on a shift away from fossil fuels.

Los Angeles Dodgers' Austin Barnes exits game against Miami Marlins. See what happened
Los Angeles Dodgers player Austin Barnes left Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins due to an incident involving Marlins hitter Nick Fortes' backswing. Initially, Barnes stayed in the game after consulting with medical and coaching staff, but later, he was substituted by Will Smith. Barnes' condition is currently under evaluation for potential structural damage and a concussion, making his return uncertain. The Dodgers view Barnes as an essential backup catcher and hope for a swift recovery. The Los Angeles Dodgers are leading the National League West with an 84-52 record, holding a 14-game advantage over the Arizona Diamondbacks. This strong position allows them to approach the playoffs with confidence. They plan to give some players extra rest and limit pitch counts to ensure they are well-prepared for the postseason. Last season, the Dodgers faced disappointment when the San Diego Padres upset them in the NLDS. This left a bitter taste in their mouths, as they believed they had the talent to reach the World Series. As the playoffs approach, the Dodgers are considered a formidable team. Their line-up boasts talented hitters, and their pitching staff, including stars like Mookie Betts and Clayton Kershaw, is equally robust. This LA Dodgers team is seen as having the potential for a successful postseason run.

Rising Rents Are Hitting American Suburbs Hardest
America’s suburbs are posting the country’s fastest-rising rents, a sign that the recent migration of families from major cities is starting to look more long-term. Many white-collar workers with remote jobs moved out of city apartments for roomier accommodations during the early months of the pandemic in 2020. Now, high mortgage rates and home prices are keeping some of the same families renting for longer periods.

Once Inoculated by Its Nazi Past, Germany Is Becoming a Far-Right Stronghold
GÖRLITZ, Germany—As evening fell on a recent Monday in this eastern German city of Gothic spires and Renaissance museums, hundreds of protesters began to gather, just as they have nearly every Monday for at least two years. They carried banners calling for Germany to leave the European Union and cheered speakers who demanded that the nearby border with Poland be shut. They are angry about migrants settling in their communities and inflation squeezing their pensions.

Unseeded Ben Shelton outguns Tiafoe to reach US Open semi-finals
Ben Shelton took down Frances Tiafoe in four sets in an all-American US Open clash Tuesday to book a semi-final date with 23-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. World number 47 Shelton defeated Tiafoe 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 6-2 to make the last four of a major for the first time and become the youngest American man to do so in New York since Michael Chang in 1992. «It doesn't get much better than that,» the 20-year-old Shelton said of a first-time meeting with Djokovic that awaits him on Friday. «I feel like I left it all out here tonight. It was an emotional battle.» Shelton saved a set point as he won a crucial third-set tie-break and pulled away in the fourth to settle a historic first Grand Slam quarter-final in the Open era featuring two African-American men. «Sometimes you've got to shut off the brain, close your eyes and just swing, and maybe it was a little bit of that down set point and it end up working out,» said Shelton. «Some may say clutch but I don't know about that.» The former college champion, who is coached by his father and former professional Bryan Shelton, arrived at his second US Open with a tour-level record of 12-20 this season. He had failed to win multiple matches at any of the 18 ATP Tour events he had played since advancing to the quarter-finals in his Australian Open debut. Ten of his 17 victories in 2023 have now come at Grand Slams.

2023 likely to be hottest year on record
EU climate monitor said on Wednesday. Heatwaves, droughts and wildfires struck Asia, Africa, Europe and North America over the last three months, with dramatic impact on economies, ecosystems and human health. The average global temperature in June, July and August was 16.77 degrees Celsius (62.19 degrees Fahrenheit), surpassing the previous 2019 record of 16.48C by a wide margin, the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said in a report. «The three months that we've just had are the warmest in approximately 120,000 years, so effectively human history,» C3S deputy director Samantha Burgess told AFP. Last month was the hottest August on record and warmer than all other months except July 2023. «Climate breakdown has begun,» said UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, echoing famous testimony before the US Congress 35 years ago, in which government scientist James Hansen declared that global warming had begun. «Our climate is imploding faster than we can cope,» Guterres added. Also on Wednesday, the World Meteorological Organization warned that more frequent and intense heatwaves are generating a «witch's brew» of air pollution that shortens human lifespans and damages other life forms. «Heatwaves worsen air quality, with knock-on effects on human health, ecosystems, agriculture and indeed our daily lives,» WMO chief Petteri Taalas said in a statement. Record-high global sea surface temperatures played a major role in stoking heat throughout the summer, with marine heatwaves hitting the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. «Looking at the additional heat we have in the surface ocean, the probability is that 2023 will end up being the warmest year on record,» Burgess said. Presumption based on gender in favour of women accused goes against principles of justice system: HC
Delhi High Court has set aside a trial court order and remanded the matter back to it for passing an order on charge afresh. The high court said the Indian legal system is founded on the principle of gender neutrality where each individual, regardless of their gender, is held accountable for their actions in accordance with law. The high court made the observations while holding that the trial court committed a «grave error» by discharging female accused on the presumption that when the male accused were already beating the complainant there could have been no occasion for them to instigate the men or join them in beating the alleged victim. «This court is constrained to note that such differentiation was created by the trial court between the 'male accused persons' and the 'female accused persons'.
