Demand for ₹2-3 tn sparked RBI-govt clash, says Acharya
₹2-3 trillion from its balance sheet in 2018 for pre-election expenditure ahead of Lok Sabha polls in the following year, former RBI deputy governor Viral Acharya said in a new prelude to his book, Quest for Restoring Financial Stability in India published by Penguin Random House India. This revelation comes amid calls for increased government spending before the general and assembly elections due in 2024, despite marginal growth in the Centre’s tax collections in the first five months of FY24. Acharya has for the first time publicly disclosed in his prelude the series of events that led to the differences between RBI and the government that he had first hinted while delivering his speech at the A.D.

Gillian Keegan expresses frustration over School Concrete Crisis, swearing caught on mic
Gillian Keegan, the UK's Education Secretary, found herself in the spotlight after being inadvertently recorded expressing frustration over the handling of the school building crisis. Following an interview with ITV, Keegan was caught on a live microphone questioning the lack of acknowledgment for her department's efforts in addressing the ongoing school concrete crisis. In an unguarded moment, she candidly remarked, «Does anyone ever say you've done a good job because everyone else has sat on their a** and done nothing?» She followed this with a rueful, «Any sign of that, no?» A source from Downing Street promptly condemned Keegan's comments, describing them as «completely wrong», as reported by BBC.

UK PM Rishi Sunak defends actions over school closures
Rishi Sunak on Monday strongly defended his record in government, dubbing allegations that he cut education funding as «completely and utterly wrong» amid an ongoing crisis over a light-weight concrete that is causing school closures in England and Wales. Thousands of pupils face disruption at the start of a new term this week after over 100 schools face full or partial closure because of concerns about reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC), which is prone to collapse. A former senior civil servant in the Department for Education (DfE) alleged that it was under Sunak's term as Chancellor that the UK Treasury failed to properly fund school rebuilding schemes. «I think that is completely and utterly wrong.
