France on red alert, ‘intense and long-lasting’ heatwave creating ‘heat dome’
Also read: Wildfire spreads on Spain's Tenerife island, forces thousands to flee homes "Some records could be broken, notably on Tuesday in the Rhone valley with 40-42C expected," said the national weather service Meteo France. The heatwave is described as "intense and long-lasting" and arriving "particularly late in the season." This weather phenomenon results from a period of high pressure that has created a "heat dome" over the country. In 2022, following a suffocating summer of record temperatures and forest fires, France, for the most part, experienced a typical holiday period this year, avoiding the intense heat that scorched southern Europe in July.

Russia downs two drones near Moscow
Moscow region, the city's mayor said on Tuesday. «Air defence shot down two attack drones. One in the Krasnogorsk area, the other in the Chastsy area,» said Sergei Sobyanin on Telegram, adding that emergency services were responding. He did not give details on damage or casualties. Russia's defence ministry reported two Ukrainian drones had been downed over the Moscow region, adding there had been no casualties. Air traffic at Moscow's Vnukovo, Sheremetyevo and Domodedovo airports had been briefly halted, the TASS news agency earlier quoted an aviation service source as saying. «Glass damage was recorded on several floors» in a multi-storey residential building in Krasnogorsk," the agency said, without specifying whether it was the result of a drone strike. «Several cars parked near the house were also damaged.» Two Ukrainian drones were downed over the Bryansk region near the Ukrainian border, Moscow's defence ministry said on Telegram, adding there were no casualties. In recent weeks, two drone attacks were repelled over Moscow's financial district, each causing minor damage to the facades of high-rise buildings.

IT midcaps set to keep hiring momentum going in near term
Persistent, LTTS, Coforge, and Happiest Minds expect headcount additions across laterals and freshers in the next few quarters after reporting positive revenue growth – although subdued – in the last quarter even as macroeconomic challenges persist. This is in contrast to large-cap IT firms that have reported weak numbers and are expecting a dip in headcount. While larger players are conserving resources and maintaining a cautious approach to hiring due to macroeconomic uncertainties, midcaps are focusing on bringing in more freshers to balance out employee costs. Happiest Minds plans to add around 1,300 to its workforce during the fiscal year while Persistent expects to onboard almost 800 freshers by December. Coforge management during its recent earnings call said out of the 1,000 people added during the first quarter, 200 were graduate engineer trainees. The company has reiterated its annual revenue growth guidance of 13-16% in constant currency terms despite deferrals in deal closures. Coforge has also seen healthy growth in the US in the last quarter of around 5.6% despite an unfavourable economic environment there. “So, at this point in time, given how big the tech services market in the US is, and how small we are in relative terms, we still see clear opportunities in the market,” Coforge chief executive Sudhir Singh told ET. The company has built a solid bench strength of employees to service some of the large deals it has won, he said. Persistent reported in-line numbers during the April-June quarter, led by strong growth across the top client base and marquee deals.

Soccer: Ambitious World Cup a wonder goal for women's game
Women's World Cup kicked off in Australia and New Zealand a month ago with some doubts it could deliver on lofty ambitions. Those concerns eased well before Sunday's final where Spain were crowned first-time champions by beating England 1-0 at a packed Stadium Australia in Sydney. Less than a year after a player revolt tore the Spanish squad apart, La Roja's triumph was only one of the surprises for record crowds and TV audiences through the month-long festival of women's football. Fears the first 32-team Women's World Cup might suffer for its size proved groundless, as did predictions of another processional victory for the United States. Sunday's final was the first without either the U.S. or Germany involved, the four-times champion Americans dumped out of the round-of-16 by Sweden and the Germans exiting before the knockout phase. The U.S.'s exit via penalty shootout ended a dynasty after back-to-back titles in 2015 and 2019. U.S.

India’s latest inflation number at 7.4% comes as a shocker, with doom-speak all around. This is so because we have been talking of getting to 4%, which was axiomatically taken to be the ideal mark. This is analogous to the US, which has a target of 2%.
