Adani promoters raised ₹39.4K cr amid scrutiny
MUMBAI : Promoters of the Adani group have generated ₹39,400 crore through stake dilutions in group companies since a damning report by US short-seller Hindenburg Research in January drove flagship Adani Enterprises Ltd to withdraw its ₹20,000 crore follow-on public offering. The group has denied the allegations. Market veterans believe this liquidity could be used as growth spending and to repay any near-term debt obligations of group companies if needed.

Protectionism to take centre stage at Abu Dhabi WTO meet
NEW DELHI : A record number of World Trade Organization (WTO) members have raised concerns about rising protectionist moves in global trade, propelling the issue to centre stage at the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC13) in Abu Dhabi in February, an official aware of the development said. Many developing nations, including India, are set to oppose the European Union’s (EU’s) carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) that aims to tax imports of carbon-intensive products such as steel, aluminium, cement, and electricity. The EU is also expected to file a complaint against the US’s Inflation Reduction Act because the $430 billion subsidy to manufacturers of green technology will distort international prices and is against WTO norms.

Sebi cracks whip on IPO promoter classification
DELHI, BENGALURU : The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has intensified its scrutiny on promoter classification of companies looking to go public, with the markets regulator’s observations prompting at least six companies in the past three months to include individuals or entities as promoters, according to three people familiar with the developments and filings reviewed by Mint. Questions were recently raised by securities lawyers and proxy advisory firms on founders of money-losing startups continuing to retain control of the companies even though they classified themselves as public shareholders.

Barbie beats The Dark Knight, another Christopher Nolan film, to be No.1 domestic film of Warner Bros.
Barbie has beaten from Day 1 at the US box office (with both films having released on July 21, 2023). The satire on the Barbie doll and patriarchy has now surpassed another Nolan film, The Dark Knight (2008), at the domestic box office in the US to become the No.1 Warner Bros. production. Barbie has collected over $537.5 million at the domestic box office by its fourth week, with The Dark Knight’s figures standing at $536 million. As it crosses into its fifth week, the Barbie movie would have surpassed Universal Pictures’ 2023 release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The animation film based on the video game crossed $574 million to be the biggest domestic release of 2023 in the US. Barbie has already crossed a whopping $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office, and at this rate, will beat Mario – with its $1.35 billion – worldwide, too, as the highest-grosser of 2023. Barbie has broken several records. In its first 17 days in theaters, it took the title of the fastest Warner Bros. film and the eighth film in Warner Bros. 100-year existence as an entrant to the $1 billion club. In fact, Barbie could even go on to beat Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which made Warner Bros. a neat $1.34 billion back then 2011, and stands as the film studio’s highest-grossing worldwide release of all time. Barbie had the biggest opening of 2023, with $162 million, where it beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which got a $146 million opening. Barbie also broke the record of the biggest-ever opening for a film by a woman director, besting Captain Marvel (2019), directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, at $153 million.

Mind-music fusion: Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick in the Wall' reconstructed from brain activity of listeners
Brain activity of people listening to Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick in the Wall' was used to reconstruct the classic rock number, scientists report in a new study. The reconstruction reveals that brain waves can be recorded and processed to bring out musical elements of the speech heard, such as rhythm, stress, accent and intonation, along with the syllables, the study from the University of California (UC), Berkeley, US, said. These musical elements are known to convey meaning in ways that spoken words alone do not. The phrase «All in all it was just a brick in the wall» could be recognised in the reproduced song, with its rhythms intact and the words muddy yet decipherable, the researchers report in the study published in the journal PLoS Biology. The listeners were 29 patients undergoing epilepsy surgery at Albany Medical Center, New York, US, over a decade ago. Neuroscientists at the centre recorded electrical activity through electrodes placed on the patients' brains as they heard an approximately 3-minute segment of the classic Pink Floyd song from the 1979 album The Wall. «As this whole field of brain machine interfaces progresses, this gives you a way to add musicality to future brain implants for people who need it, someone who's got some disabling neurological or developmental disorder compromising speech output.

Government saved 12 per cent in construction cost in awarding Dwarka Expressway project, says road ministry sources
CAG findings that the cost was exorbitant are misplaced as the auditor did not factor in the actual cost, top sources in the road transport ministry said. According to reports, the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had found that the National Highways Authority of India's (NHAI) decision to go for an elevated carriageway on the Haryana portion of the Dwarka Expressway pushed up the construction cost to Rs 251 crore per kilometre from Rs 18.2 crore per km estimated earlier.
