UK PM Rishi Sunak shows support for skilled expats amid migration pressure, ‘It's best place to come and do business’
Rishi Sunak recently showed strong support towards skilled migrant workers stating that ‘half of the UK's innovative companies have an immigrant founder’ and ‘it is the best country in the world to invest and do business ’ Amid growing calls to reduce immigration, he lauded the UK's "most competitive visa regime," positioning it as the world's best for investment and business. While speaking at Global Investment Summit, the UK PM said, “We don’t have a monopoly on talent in this country, and we recognise that nearly half of our most innovative companies have an immigrant founder." He further praised the country’s ‘most competitive visa regime’ and said “So, if you’re an innovator, an entrepreneur, a researcher, you should know that the most competitive visa regime for highly skilled international talent is right here in the United Kingdom." His intervention comes against the backdrop of discontent within his own Conservative Party ranks after last week’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) data revealed record-high annual migration to the country and former home secretary Suella Braverman’s allies laid the blame squarely at Downing Street’s door.

UK general election: Record number of Indian-origin MPs elected to Parliament
record number of around 28 Indian-origin members of Parliament have been elected to the House of Commons in the UK's general election as results were announced on Friday, with several Conservatives surviving an overall brutal outcome for their party. Outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak leads the Tory charge of British Indians holding on to their seats, with a decisive win in his Richmond and Northallerton constituency in Yorkshire. It would have come as small consolation for the Tory leader, who saw his party haemorrhage over 200 seats as the Labour Party's landslide victory unfolded. «On this difficult night, I would like to express my gratitude to the people of the Richmond and Northallerton constituency for your continued support. Since I moved here a decade ago, you have made me and my family feel so at home and I look forward to serving you for years to come,» said Sunak, in a message clearly aimed at dismissing pre-election chatter around his future plans as a politician. Other prominent British Indian Tories holding on to their seats included former home secretaries, Suella Braverman and Priti Patel, as did Sunak's Goan-origin Cabinet ally Claire Coutinho.

Tougher international student visa norms come into force in the UK
students, including Indians, starting courses at British universities this month will no longer be able to bring family members on all but postgraduate research courses and courses with government-funded scholarships under tougher UK visa norms effective from Monday. The UK Home Office said the changes, first announced by former home secretary Suella Braverman in May last year, are aimed at clamping down on people using the student visa as a backdoor route to work in the UK and will see an estimated 140,000 fewer people come to the UK.

UK PM Sunak gambles on return of Cameron to win over moderate voters
David Cameron's return to government, but his appointment is one that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hopes will signal to wavering supporters that the Conservatives are not lurching to the right to win an election expected next year. As well as firing his interior minister, Suella Braverman, after she published an unauthorised article criticising the police's handling of protests, Sunak has used a wider reshuffle to bring back the prime minister who campaigned to remain in the European Union in a referendum on membership he called in 2016. It's a risky strategy — while welcomed by centrist lawmakers, the party's right senses the end of their increased dominance, built during the wars over EU membership, with one fearing the appointment amounted to a "Brexit surrender". «He has appointed the man who led the 'remain' campaign and who has got huge problems over his association with Greensill,» said a Conservative lawmaker on the right of the party, referring to Cameron's lobbying work for a now-collapsed supply chain finance firm. «Is he spoiling for a fight with Conservatives?» The decision to fire Braverman removes from the cabinet one of the most prominent supporters of leaving the EU and means even more of Sunak's top ministers supported remaining in the bloc in 2016. Out of the 29 cabinet roles, at least 16 backed remaining in the EU, compared with 10 who supported leaving. Sunak backed Brexit.

Who is Suella Braverman? Know in detail about UK Home Secretary sacked by Rishi Sunak
Rishi Sunak has sacked Home Secretary Suella Braverman after she came under attack for writing an article in the 'Times'. In the article, the Indian-origin MP criticized what she called «pro-Palestinian mobs» and wrote that protest scenes were «disturbingly reminiscent» of those seen in Northern Ireland. Braverman also criticized the Met Police for a «double standard» over their handling of protests. Quitting her office, the Tory MP said it was «the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary». James Cleverly has replaced her.

London police arrest over 120 as pro-Palestinian rally draws counter-protests
London on Saturday, with police arresting over 120 people as they sought to stop far-right counter-protesters from ambushing the main rally. Skirmishes broke out between police and the far-right groups gathered to protest against the demonstration taking place on Armistice Day, the anniversary of the end of World War One, when Britain commemorates its war dead. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condemned the violence seen at the Cenotaph war memorial and also attacked «Hamas sympathisers» who joined the bigger rally, «singing antisemitic chants and brandishing pro-Hamas signs and clothing on today's protest». Tensions had been running high before Saturday's march — the biggest in a series to show support for the Palestinians and call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip — after interior minister Suella Braverman called them «hate marches» led by «mobs». London's Metropolitan Police had refused ministerial requests to block the event, saying they did not have indications that there would be serious violence, straining relations with the government. Police said in a statement late on Saturday that they had arrested 126 people so far, the majority of whom were right wing protesters who formed part of a group several hundred strong which police said included football hooligans.

Controversial "Jihad" chant sparks debate over hate crime laws in the UK
Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, acknowledged the need to reconsider these boundaries, particularly in light of a video that emerged showing a man chanting «jihad» at a separate gathering from the main march. The Metropolitan Police closely examined the video and found no identifiable offenses. Sir Mark Rowley emphasized that the police are committed to enforcing the law but pointed out that it is Parliament's responsibility to define and redraw these boundaries.
