Today’s world war on inflation is yielding no winners
Another month, another suspenseful inflation number. India’s 6.8% rise in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) on Tuesday was lower than expected because of slower-rising vegetable prices that however still jumped 26%. The US’s August inflation number released on Wednesday, meanwhile, disrupted the cheery view that the US economy is managing to avoid a recession while inflation does the Federal Reserve’s bidding without needing more interest rate hikes.

Kim Jong Un says Russia will win 'great victory' over enemies
Kim Jong Un said Wednesday he was confident Moscow would win a «great victory» over its enemies, during a high-profile banquet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin held talks with the reclusive leader in Russia's Vostochny cosmodrome in the Far East, as Moscow grows increasingly isolated from the West over its offensive in Ukraine. «We are confident that the Russian army and people will win a great victory in the just fight to punish evil groups who pursue hegemony, expansion, and ambition, and to create a stable development environment,» Kim said. «I firmly believe that the heroic Russian army and people will brilliantly inherit the tradition of victory, and vigorously display their noble dignity and honour on the two frontiers of military operations and building a strong nation,» he told Putin. Russian news agencies reported that during his remarks Kim specifically referred to Russia's "special military operation" — a term Moscow uses for its offensive in Ukraine. US officials and experts have warned Russia is interested in buying North Korean ammunition to use in its assault on Ukraine — an arms deal that would defy global sanctions on Moscow.

Explainer: How could Russia help North Korea build a satellite?
Kim Jong Un on Wednesday toured Russia's most modern space launch centre, where President Vladimir Putin promised to help Pyongyang build satellites. The unprecedented visit comes as North Korea seeks to put its first spy satellite into orbit, an effort that has seen two failed attempts this year. The promised Russian aid comes as North Korea's scientists have vowed to try another launch of the new Chollima-1 booster in October. Here's what we know about North Korea's race for space, why it's so controversial, and how Russia might help: WHY DOES NORTH KOREA WANT A SATELLITE? Since 1998 North Korea has launched six satellites, two of which appeared to have been successfully placed in orbit. In 2015, a senior North Korean space official said the country wanted to develop cooperation with Russia on «peaceful» use of outer space, the official told TASS. The most recent successful satellite launch was in 2016.

Kim offers Putin and Russia North Korea’s full support and refers to Moscow’s 'sacred fight'
Kim Jong Un told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday that his country offers its “full and unconditional support” for Russia’s “sacred fight” to defend its security interests, in an apparent reference to the war in Ukraine, and said Pyongyang will always stand with Moscow on the “anti-imperialist” front. Through a translator, Kim called North Korea’s relations with Russia “the first priority.” Putin in his opening remarks welcomed Kim to Russia and said he was glad to see him. Putin listed economic cooperation, humanitarian issues and the “situation in the region” among the agenda items for their talks. Talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un began on Wednesday at the Vostochny cosmodrome, Russian state news agency Tass reported. The talks, which included their delegations, began shortly after Putin and Kim toured various facilities at the cosmodrome, including two launch pads. The leaders met at the remote Siberian rocket launch facility for a summit that underscores how the two leaders’ interests are aligning in the face of their separate, intensifying confrontations with the United States. The two men began their meeting with a tour of a Soyuz-2 space rocket launch facility, at which the North Korean leader peppered a Russian space official with questions about the rockets. Kim's meeting with Putin came hours after North Korea fired two ballistic missiles toward the sea, extending a highly provocative run in North Korean weapons testing since the start of 2022, as Kim used the distraction caused by Putin’s war on Ukraine to accelerate his weapons development. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff didn’t immediately say how far the North Korean missiles flew.

Vladimir Putin says Russia to help North Korea build satellites
Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday that Russia would help North Korea build satellites and, when asked if he and Kim Jong Un would talk about weapons supplies, replied that the two leaders would discuss all issues. When asked by reporters if Russia would help Kim build satellites, Putin replied: «That's why we came here. The leader of the DPRK shows great interest in rocket engineering, they are also trying to develop space.» Putin showed Kim around Russia's most modern space rocket launch site, the Vostochny Cosmodrome, which is nestled among the forests of eastern Russia not far from the Chinese border. Kim arrived at Vostochny by train, after crossing into Russia early on Tuesday. «I am glad to see you,» Putin said as he shook Kim's hand for around 40 seconds at Vostochny. «This is our new cosmodrome.»

Vladimir Putin hails Make in India; asks Russian officials to use domestic cars like Indian counterparts
Putin on Tuesday hailed India's "Make in India" Initiative at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum’s (EEF) plenary session in Vladivostok and suggested that Russian officials like their Indian counterparts should use Russian cars for driving, instead of using foreign automobile brands. Earlier on Sunday Russia hailed India's G20 Presidency and stated that the Global South led by India did not allow the war in Ukraine to take over the agenda. Putin has been one of the ardent supporters of the PM’s focus on ‘Make in India’ amid Western sanctions on Russia since the war. In June heaping praises on PM Narendra Modi Putin had said “Our friends in India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a great friend of Russia, a few years ago presented a concept — «Make in India». And it had a very visible effect on the Indian economy.” At another EEF session Putin said that the government will not allow the pace of development to slacken in the Russian Far East as it is a strategic region for the country.

Vladimir Putin to comment on 2024 election bid by end of year
Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he will only comment on whether he will run for re-election in 2024 after the ballot is officially announced later this year. Putin has led Russia since the turn of the century, winning four presidential elections and briefly serving as prime minister in a system where political opposition has become virtually non-existent. «According to the law, parliament must make a decision at the end of the year,» Putin told the audience at the Eastern Economic Forum in the Pacific port of Vladivostok. «When the elections are announced, when the date is set, then we will talk about it,» he added. Presidential elections in Russia are officially set by parliament and held every six years, after the term limit was lengthened from four years previously.

Putin warns of economic strife should inflation rise uncontrollably
Vladimir Putin on Tuesday said increasing inflation had forced the central bank to hike rates to 12% last month, warning that Russia's economy would suffer if price rises were allowed to get out of control. Putin, speaking at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, said he saw no problems with rouble volatility and said the authorities had a cache of tools to keep the currency and markets under control. The rouble hit its strongest level in almost six weeks against the dollar in early trade on Tuesday, buoyed by gradually increasing foreign currency sales by exporters and prospects that the central bank may hike rates again this week.

Don’t expect Modi’s new India to be a friend to the West
Narendra Modi, who embraced the Sanskrit name for his country in the same week that he played lavish host to the G-20 summit in New Delhi, is trying hard to project India as a “vishwaguru" (guru to the world). It is time to examine his claims more closely, and also to see the present and the future of his “New India" without comforting illusions.
