China has raised objections to the US hosting the Group of 20 nations in 2026 as already announced by President Joe Biden’s administration, according to four people familiar with the discussions.G-20 members rotate their presidency of the group, including the annual summit of world leaders, and the US has said it will take it on after India, Brazil and South Africa complete their respective yearlong stints. China’s objection — backed by Russia, according to one of the people — is mostly symbolic as it’s unlikely the decision will be reversed. The people asked not to be named since the discussions on the sidelines of the current G-20 in India are private. The Chinese move was first reported by the Financial Times. Beijing asked that its displeasure be recorded, according to the people, who didn’t know the reasons for China’s objections.

Russia said on Saturday it was sticking to its conditions for a return to the Black Sea grain deal which it quit in July. In particular, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia needed its state agricultural bank — and not a subsidiary of the bank, as proposed by the United Nations — to be reconnected to the international SWIFT bank payments system. «All our conditions are perfectly well known. They do not need interpretation, they are absolutely concrete and all this is absolutely achievable,» Peskov said. «Therefore Russia maintains its responsible, clear and consistent position, which has been repeatedly voiced by the president.» The Black Sea deal was brokered by Turkey and the United Nations in July 2022 to enable Ukraine to export grain by sea despite the war and help ease a global food crisis. It was accompanied by an agreement to facilitate Russia's own exports of food and fertiliser, which Moscow says has not been fulfilled.

Vladimir Putin congratulated North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday on the 75 anniversary of the country's founding and called for stronger ties «on all fronts». «I am convinced that thanks to our joint efforts we will continue to strengthen… bilateral ties on all fronts», Putin said in a message to Kim as quoted by the Kremlin. «This fully corresponds to the interests of our people» and helps to ensure «the security and stability on the Korean peninsula and northeast Asia,» he said. Putin noted that the Soviet Union was the first country to recognise the North Korean regime and said that «since then relations between our two countries have always been based on the principles of friendship, good neighbourliness and mutual respect». «I sincerely wish you good health and success and I wish all North Korean citizens peace and prosperity,» Putin added.

North Korea invited visiting Chinese delegates and Russian artists to a paramilitary parade featuring rocket launchers pulled by trucks and tractors, state media said Saturday, in leader Kim Jong Un's latest effort to display his ties with Moscow and Beijing in the face of deepening confrontations with Washington. The event in the capital, Pyongyang, which began Friday night to celebrate North Korea's 75th founding anniversary that fell on Saturday, came amid expectations that Kim will travel to Russia soon for a meeting with President Vladimir Putin that could focus on North Korean arm sales to refill reserves drained by the Kremlin's war on Ukraine. While China has sent a delegation led by Vice Premier Liu Guozhong to the North Korea's anniversary celebrations, Russia sent a military song and dance group. South Korean media speculated that the lack of Russian government officials at the festivities in Pyongyang could be related to preparations for a summit between Kim and Putin, which Washington expects within the month.

G20 Summit: The world leaders are in New Delhi for the 18th G20 Summit which will begin on 9 September. Joe Biden who departed to India to attend the G20 Summit does not intend to meet with Chinese Premier Li Qiang this weekend, as reported by Bloomberg. The president’s national security advisor, Jake Sullivan, briefed reporters on the summit agenda after the president left Washington on the trip, which will also take him to Vietnam. “We don’t have a plan for the president to engage with the Chinese premier at this time," Sullivan said as quoted by Bloomberg.

The voting for Russian-installed legislatures in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions begins Friday and concludes Sunday. It has already been denounced by Kyiv and the West. «It constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, which Russia continues to disregard,» the Council of Europe, the continent's foremost human rights body, said this week. Kyiv echoed that sentiment, with the parliament saying in a statement that the balloting in areas where Russia «conducts active hostilities» poses a threat to Ukrainian lives.

G20 Summit scheduled to take place in India. Wagner Group as a terrorist organisation, media reports said on Tuesday, quoting Home Secretary Suella Braverman. The UK was set to make the Wagner Group a «proscribed» organisation under anti-terror laws, putting it on a par with Islamic State and al-Qaeda, a report in the Daily Mail said. «Wagner is a violent and destructive organisation which has acted as a military tool of Vladimir Putin's Russia overseas,» the newspaper quoted Braverman as saying. «While Putin's regime decides what to do with the monster it created, Wagner's continuing destabilising activities only continue to serve the Kremlin's political goals.» Under the Terrorism Act 2000 the home secretary has the power to proscribe an organisation if they believe it is involved in terrorism. A proscription order makes it a criminal offence to support the group. «They are terrorists, plain and simple — and this proscription order makes that clear in UK law,» a BBC report added, quoting the minister. «Wagner has been involved in looting, torture and barbarous murders,» Braverman added in the Daily Mail. The group's operations in Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa «are a threat to global security,» she said. «That is why we are proscribing this terrorist organisation and continuing to aid Ukraine wherever we can in its fight against Russia.» Draft measures to ban the Wagner Group under the act will be laid in Parliament on Wednesday, the reports said. In July, Britain announced sanctions against 13 individuals and businesses it said had links to the Russian group in Africa, accusing it of crimes there including killings and torture. A U.S. official said Monday that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un may travel to Russia soon to meet with President Vladimir Putin as the Kremlin tries to acquire military equipment for use in its war in Ukraine.

G20 summit in New Delhi on September 9-10. Instead, Premier Li Qiang will represent China, according to a brief announcement from the Chinese Foreign Ministry. While the ministry's spokesperson Mao Ning chose not to elaborate on Xi's absence, he did stress China's commitment to the G20's goals of global economic cooperation.
