National Security Adviser Ajit Doval met with China’s top foreign policy official Wang Yi on the sidelines of the BRICS NSAs’ Meeting in South Africa on Monday. Wang Yi, who serves as Director of the CPC Foreign Affairs Commission, is China’s seniormost diplomat. “During the meeting, NSA conveyed that the situation along the LAC in the Western Sector of the India-China boundary since 2020 had eroded strategic trust and the public and political basis of the relationship.

Doval has met top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi and discussed bilateral ties with him. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the Friends of BRICS meeting here in South Africa on Monday. The meeting came days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Wang, director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, in the Indonesian capital Jakarta, and discussed outstanding issues relating to peace and tranquillity in border areas.

NSA Ajit Doval on Monday participated in the 'Friends of BRICS' meeting in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the Brics NSA meet and called for collective efforts to deal with cyber risks involving terrorists and radicals. At the meeting, the issue of cybersecurity was discussed at length, ET has learnt. In addition to Brics, the following 'Friends of Brics' countries participated — Belarus, Burundi, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Kazakhstan and Cuba.

Brics member states will meet in South Africa from Monday to Wednesday and explore a security cooperation mechanism for the grouping amid several geopolitical security threats. It is not clear yet whether NSA Ajit Doval will meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, director of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee Foreign Affairs Commission, on the sidelines of the event, which will be closely followed amid the Russia-Ukraine war.

China's top diplomat Wang Yi told the Indian foreign minister that bilateral ties need to be stabilised, as the two Asian neighbours searched for ways to ease simmering military tensions along their vast border. Jaishankar said he discussed outstanding issues related to peace and tranquillity along LAC. In June, India and China held yet another round of diplomatic talks on the impasse along LAC in the Ladakh sector. India has maintained that relations cannot be normalised till peace and tranquillity are restored along the LAC. Remaining friction points along the LAC include Depsang and Demchok. Addressing EAS meeting earlier, Jaishankar in an indirect message to China emphasised that the body must be committed to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based Indo-Pacific, with respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said India firmly supported the Asean Outlook on the Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and its implementation through EAS. «There is great synergy between the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative proposed by India and AOIP. Quad will always complement Asean and Asean-led mechanisms. AOIP contributes to the vision of the Quad,» Jaishankar said. «India affirms Asean centrality in the Indo-Pacific and advocates the strengthening of EAS.» The statement can be seen as an attempt to assuage Asean misgivings over Quad, a grouping of Australia, India, Japan and the United States.
