Why carbon capture is no easy solution to climate change
carbon dioxide emissions to keep them from the atmosphere are central to the climate strategies of many world governments as they seek to follow through on international commitments to decarbonize by mid-century. They are also expensive, unproven at scale, and can be hard to sell to a nervous public. As nations gather for the 28th United Nations climate change conference in the United Arab Emirates at the end of November, the question of carbon capture’s future role in a climate-friendly world will be in focus. Here are some details about the state of the industry now, and the obstacles in the way of widespread deployment: FORMS OF CARBON CAPTURE The most common form of carbon capture technology involves capturing the gas from a point source like an industrial smokestack.

With sustainable cotton in fashion, India's farmers seek fair price
WARANGAL: Two decades ago, Damera Yakamma's husband, a cotton farmer in a southern Indian village, committed suicide by consuming pesticide because of his mounting debts, leaving his widow in charge of their two acres of land. After that, the mother of four — then in her mid-twenties — decided she did not want any more chemicals entering her home. With the help of a non-profit in Telangana state's Warangal district, Yakamma and some other local farmers grew their first organic cotton crop in 2005 using natural manure and bio-pesticides. They benefited from lower costs, better health and soil, and premium market prices as buyers sought their higher-quality cotton. But they lost their organic certification in 2015 after a genetically modified cotton variety known as BT, promising higher yields and pest resistance, spread so widely across India that they could no longer buy indigenous seeds from dealers. Still the farmers stuck with natural growing methods to produce cotton sustainably, in a bid to meet growing demand from fashion brands that are increasingly adopting targets to cut climate-heating emissions in their value chains. According to the Confederation of British Industry, in 2020 sustainable cotton accounted for nearly 20% of the global cotton supply.

COP28 to begin from Nov 30: Private sector investment, CO2 emissions among 8 other key themes on agenda
Emissions mitigation targets: The first global stocktake report found that the current emissions reduction targets that countries have established, as part of their commitments under the Paris Agreement, are insufficient to meet the overarching goal of the Agreement to ideally limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. 2.Phase out fossil fuel: The European Union has announced that it will be bringing a proposal to phase out unabated fossil fuel use to COP28.

Trade unions demand govt expedite rescue operations at Silkyara Tunnel
Silkyara tunnel be expedited to save the workers and called for a detailed probe into the incident while reiterating its demand to withdraw the Code on Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions, 2020. “There should be a thorough probe into the laxity at any level, right from tendering to various other stages of work of the tunnel,” the trade unions said in a joint letter. The 10 unions include Congress-backed INTUC, AITUC of the Communist Party, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, Sewa, Aicctu, LPF and UTUC along with independent sectoral federations and associations. “We demand the Occupational Safety and Health Code, based on the premise of ‘ease of doing business’, be withdrawn forthwith, which weakens whatever safety measures exist at present, rather pushes the workers out of the safety net,” it said. The trade unions demanded that the government ratify the ILO conventions about health and safety, which have been brought under Fundamental Principles of Rights at Work by ILO in its session in 2022. “We demand that all the four codes, including the Code on OSH, be withdrawn and the Indian Labour Conference should be held at the earliest to address the workers’ concerns on codification of laws,” it said in a statement. The road transport and highways secretary Anurag Jain said on Tuesday that the government hopes to rescue the trapped workers in 72 hours if the horizontal drilling of the tunnel, resumed on Tuesday, is successful. 41 workers got trapped after a portion of the tunnel under construction between Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri national highway collapsed on November 12. As part of the Chardham Mahamarg Pariyojana, the road transport and highway ministry has taken up the construction

US inflation can spring nasty surprises even if it seems to be cooling down
The latest US inflation report, showing that price increases slowed in October, suggests that the economy just might get the ‘immaculate disinflation’ that everyone is hoping for: Inflation will fall to its pre-pandemic levels and remain there, and the US will avoid a recession. Allow me to make the pessimist’s case that we’re not out of the woods yet. The sunnier view does have a lot going for it.

Spouse with earning capacity can't be permitted to sit idle and saddle partner with expenses responsibility: HC
Delhi High Court has observed that a spouse who has a reasonable capacity to earn but chooses to remain unemployed and idle without sufficient explanation should not be permitted to saddle the other partner with the one-sided responsibility of meeting expenses by providing maintenance. The high court made the observation while reducing the amount of monthly maintenance from Rs 30,000 to Rs 21,000 to be paid by a man to his estranged wife under the Hindu Marriage Act (HMA). It said the woman claimed to have no independent source of income but has a reasonable educational background being a graduate from Delhi University. “She appears to have voluntarily undertaken social work as claimed despite there being no impediment to undertaking meaningful employment. «The spouse having a reasonable capacity of earning but who chooses to remain unemployed and idle without any sufficient explanation or indicating sincere efforts to gain employment should not be permitted to saddle the other party with one-sided responsibility of meeting out the expenses,” a bench of justices V Kameswar Rao and Anoop Kumar Mendiratta said. The bench said the maintenance does not have to be provided with mathematical precision but to give relief to the spouse who is unable to maintain and support during the pendency of proceedings and to ensure that the party should not suffer due to paucity of source of income. It said the provision for maintenance under the HMA is gender neutral and sections 24 and 25 of the Act provide for the rights, liabilities and obligations arising from marriage between the parties. The high court was hearing an appeal by the man challenging a trial court's order directing him to pay Rs 30,000 monthly maintenance to his
