Israeli hostages complicate plan for 'mighty vengeance' against Hamas
Benjamin Netanyahu's options for hitting Hamas over its deadly incursion into Israel could be reined in by concern for the many Israelis seized in the raid, as a nation scarred by past hostage crises faces perhaps its worst one yet. In a dramatic assault launched from Gaza on Saturday, the Palestinian group Hamas stormed into Israeli towns, killing more than 600 Israelis and escaping with dozens of hostages, in the deadliest day for Israel since the 1973 war. Netanyahu has vowed «mighty vengeance» but the fate of the Israeli soldiers, elderly people, women and children taken into Gaza — the numbers are still unclear — complicates how Israel delivers on its promise to hit back hard and fast, while sticking to a longstanding principle of leaving no one behind. Israelis are reeling from the assault and from images of fellow citizens being bundled off to Gaza. «There is no chance she will come back,» sobbed a young Israeli girl, talking about her sister who was killed in the attack, while she and her parents were held hostage. She was shown in a video posted on the social media platform X by senior Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs official, Ambassador David Saranga. In 2011, Israel swapped hundreds of Palestinian prisoners to win the release of one Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit, who was held for five years.

MCX gets nod from SEBI to launch new commodity derivatives platform
Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX), India’s largest commodity derivatives exchange, on October 8, received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) Technical Advisory Committee to launch a new web-based commodity derivatives platform (CPD). «SEBI Technical Advisory Committee has recommended that MCX and MCXCCL may Go-Live with the CDP and to intimate SEBI regarding the proposed date for Go Live,» MCX said in an exchange filing. «Accordingly, SEBI has withdrawn its directions to MCX and MCXCCL to keep the proposed Go-Live of CDP in abeyance,» it added. The approval comes after the SEBI had on September 29 asked the company to put on hold the proposed go-live of its new commodity derivatives platform planned for the first week of October. Earlier, MCX had said that its commodity derivatives platform would go live on October 3. The above action had been taken by the market regulator in view of the writ petitions filed by Chennai Financial Markets and Accountability (CFMA) on CDP. Shares of India's largest commodity exchange, the Multi Commodity Exchange, rallied 4.6% to Rs 2,039 on Friday's trade. On a year-to-date basis, the stock has surged 40%, while it has rallied over 55% in the past one year. As per Trendlyne data, the average target price of the stock is Rs 1,811, which indicates a downside of 11% from the current market prices.

What is Lebanon's Hezbollah?
Lebanon's Hezbollah said it targeted Israeli military positions in the disputed Shebaa Farms on Sunday, saying it was acting «in solidarity» with the Palestinian people after an unprecedented attack by Hamas gunmen from Gaza into Israel. Israel responded with barrages of artillery into southern Lebanon. No casualties have been reported. Backed by Iran, the Shi'ite group has risen from a shadowy faction established during Lebanon's 1975-90 civil war to a heavily armed force with big sway over the Lebanese state.

View: Attack on Israel is calculated and ruthless — and that’s Hamas
Hamas’s massive attack on Israel is that it was a surprise. The operation was of unprecedented scale, involving thousands of personnel and pieces of equipment, from hang gliders to bulldozers and rockets. Such an effort demands weeks if not months of preparation, and all of it took place under the nose of an Israeli intelligence service that has a deserved reputation as one of the most effective in the world. How that happened is cause for deep embarrassment in Israel’s security community and will prompt a painful internal investigation.

Biden's hopes for the Middle East imperiled by eruption of violence
Middle East for a new era. But the old Middle East, it turns out, still has something to say about it. The stunning Hamas assault on Israel on Saturday served as a gut-wrenching reminder that the decades-old conflict with Palestinians remains a cancer that has not gone away even as leaders in Washington, Jerusalem, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab capitals would prefer to focus on building a revamped region. U.S. officials said it was too early to say whether the attack was explicitly motivated by a desire by Hamas or its patron Iran to disrupt President Joe Biden's effort to broker a landmark deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia that would profoundly reorient the Middle East. But they acknowledged that it could complicate the already delicate negotiations and make it that much harder to reach an agreement akin to the Abraham Accords between Israel and smaller Arab nations. Also Read: Israel Palestine War Live Updates: At least 500 dead in Israel and Gaza after Hamas attack; Indian students get in touch with Embassy «This will slow considerably if not kill the Saudi Abraham Accords deal,» said Mara Rudman, a former Middle East peace diplomat under President Barack Obama. «It strikes at the heart of key elements for Saudi entry, a pathway forward for Palestinians in West Bank and Gaza,» she added. «And on the Israeli side, there will be zero appetite across a wide political spectrum for helping Palestinians, despite the fact that so doing could actually enhance, not detract from, Israeli security.»
