2023 summer was the hottest summer on record since 1880, NASA confirms
NASA. The scorching heat waves experienced in North America, Europe, Asia, and other regions are attributed to human-induced global warming, compounded by the recurring climate phenomenon known as El Niño. NASA's analysis reveals that August 2023 was exceptionally hot, with temperatures 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees Celsius) above the average for summer. This extreme heatwave affected a staggering 57 million people in the southern and southwestern United States, reaching the highest category of severity. When considering the combined temperatures for June, July, and August, they were 0.41 degrees Fahrenheit (0.23 degrees Celsius) warmer than all previous summers. This alarming increase underscores the growing impact of global warming on the climate. In fact, NASA scientists confirmed that July 2023 was the hottest July on record, with the last five hottest Julys occurring within the past five years.

Ken Paxton acquitted: Who is Ken Paxton what was his impeachment trial about?
Ken Paxton was acquitted of 16 charges brought against him in an impeachment trial. These charges aimed to remove him from his position because of corruption allegations against him. The trial took two weeks, with one additional day for the jury to think about the case. Earlier, the Texas House of Representatives, where many politicians work, had decided to impeach him by a big vote. Paxton had become well-known for fighting against the decisions of former President Barack Obama and supporting former President Donald Trump. He was involved in lawsuits about healthcare, immigration, and the 2020 election. This made him popular among conservative groups, even though he had legal troubles in the past. However, this year, his political support started to weaken when the Texas House accused him of abusing his power and taking bribes. The House's investigation was kept mostly secret until they decided to make it public and vote. Some of Paxton's supporters said that politicians who didn't support him would face strong competition in future elections, and Donald Trump was one of the people who supported Paxton throughout the trial.

Spain women's World Cup players demand more heads roll as Rubiales in court
World Cup winners demanded more heads roll at its scandal-hit RFEF federation whose disgraced ex-boss appeared in court on sexual assault charges. Just hours after Luis Rubiales was quizzed by a judge for kissing midfielder Jenni Hermoso, all but two of Spain's 23 World Cup players said they would not don the national shirt without deeper changes within the RFEF, demanding its current interim head also resign. The statement came as the squad's new coach Montse Tome was to announce the lineup for two upcoming UEFA Women's Nations League matches against Sweden and Switzerland, which was promptly postponed, federation sources said. «The changes put in place are not enough,» said a statement signed by 39 players, among them 21 of the 23 World Cup winners. Demanding «fundamental changes to the RFEF's leadership», they called for the «resignation of the RFEF president» Pedro Rocha, who took over as interim leader when FIFA suspended Rubiales on August 26. Despite a string of recent changes, the federation remains in the hands of officials appointed by Rubiales, with the players insisting on structural changes «within the office of the president and the secretary general». The bombshell came after days of optimism within the RFEF that the players would come round after it sacked controversial coach Jorge Vilda, appointed Tome in his stead and pledged further changes, not to mention Rubiales' long-awaited resignation on Sunday. On August 25, 81 Spain players, including the 23 world champions, had started a mass strike saying they would not play for the national team without significant changes at the head of the federation.Brought to court by a kiss Earlier on Friday, Rubiales appeared in court where he was quizzed by Judge

India's progressive, secular image dented by violent incidents, BJP adding fuel to fire: Kharge at CWC
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday said incidents of violence were tarnishing the image of a progressive and secular India and alleged the BJP was adding «fuel to fire». In his opening remarks at the first meeting of the reconstituted Congress Working Committee (CWC) here, Kharge said the party demands an immediate start of the Census process along with a caste survey to secure the right to health, education, employment and food security for the deprived sections of society. He said 27 INDIA bloc parties stand together on fundamental issues of importance. After three successful meetings, the opposition alliance is forging ahead to combat the «anti-people and anti-democratic BJP government», the Congress chief said. Perturbed by this development, the BJP dispensation is resorting to vindictive action against opposition parties, he alleged. At the CWC meeting, Kharge said, «We also strongly condemn the government's attempts to stifle the opposition in Parliament and curtail public scrutiny in Parliament.» The forthcoming special session of Parliament raises concerns about the ruling party's intentions, he added. Claiming that the country is «at a crossroads today, facing many serious internal challenges», the Congress chief alleged that the Narendra Modi government has been a «complete failure» in controlling inflation, unemployment, raging violence in Manipur, widening inequality and declining condition of farmers and labourers. «The entire nation is witnessing the tragic events still unfolding in Manipur.

Midcap Surge: Experts decode India's growth amid global flux
“The correction we observed in midcap seems overdone primarily because, if you consider the index, 75% weightage is on large caps and 25% covers numerous midcaps,” says Sudip Bandyopadhyay of Inditrade Capital. “Midcaps and smallcaps will always remain an attractive investment opportunity. They do present challenges, like liquidity. Investing in some of these smallcaps is similar to venturing into VC-backed companies – they exhibit very strong growth,” says Punita Kumar Sinha of Pacific Paradigm Advisors. Edited excerpts:

Explore possibilities of extending benefits of COVID-19 schemes to all orphan children: SC to Centre
Supreme Court has said, asking the Centre if there are ways the benefits of schemes, including PM Cares fund, which were meant for children orphaned during the COVID-19 pandemic, can be extended to all orphans. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra on Friday asked Additional Solicitor General Vikramjeet Banerjee, appearing for Centre, to seek instructions in the matter. «You have rightly brought out a policy for orphans, whose parents died due to the COVID pandemic. An orphan is an orphan, irrespective of whether the parents died in an accident or illness. By bringing these schemes, you are attending to the condition and not the parentage. »You seek an instruction on whether benefits of schemes including PM Cares fund meant for children orphaned during the COVID-19 pandemic can be extended to other orphaned children," the bench told Banerjee. The ASG said he was recently given a brief to appear in the matter and would respond to the court's query in four weeks' time.

Congress prods SEBI to act against Adani firms, demands probe by JPC
Congress on Saturday questioned Securities and Exchange Board of India's (SEBI) move of not acting on money laundering allegations against «Adani-linked entities» and called for the formation of a joint parliamentary committee to discuss the issue during the special session of Parliament. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh wondered whether SEBI will act now that the Mauritius financial regulator has revoked the licences of two such entities. He also raised his doubts about the credibility of SEBI, asking why the body has failed to inspire confidence as a fair regulator of capital markets in the country. Ramesh said that the Financial Services Commission (FSC), the Mauritian equivalent of SEBI, revoked the licences of the controlling shareholder of two Adani-linked funds in May 2022 for violating several laws including the Financial Services Act, the Securities Act, the Financial Intelligence and Anti-Money Laundering Regulations (2003 and 2018), and the Code on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing. «Even as SEBI professes helplessness, ironically Mauritian regulators have taken stringent action against suspect Adani-linked entities,» the Congress leader said. He said Emerging India Fund Management, whose licences were revoked on these grounds, controlled two funds that were «conduits for Vinod Adani associates Nasser Ali Shaban Ahli and Chang Chung-Ling.» «Ahli and Chang made dubious investments to Adani companies through these very funds,» he alleged. «Will SEBI awake from its Modi-made slumber… Why is it failing to inspire confidence that it will act as a fair regulator of capital markets and protect the interests of shareholders,» Ramesh asked. «This is simply more evidence that nothing
